application deadlines
Freshmen applying for summer or fall admission (domestic, excluding Design or AGI)
Applications that are submitted and have all required materials received by November 1 will be considered for campus merit-based scholarships as part of our Early Action program.
- Deadline 1: October 15
- Deadline 2: November 1
- Final Review Deadline: February 1
Notification Date: December 15
Notification Date: January 30
Notification Date: March 30
Applications submitted and/or completed after the February 1 deadline will be considered on the basis of space availability.
Applications must be submitted and required materials postmarked by the deadline in order to receive an admission decision on time. If you miss a deadline, your application will be reviewed in the next notification period.
Scores from the October SAT exam are scheduled for delivery in late October. They will arrive in time for the November 1 Early Action deadlines to be considered for campus merit-based scholarships. Although they will arrive after the October 15 application deadline we will be able to use them when reviewing applications submitted by that date for a December 15 admission decision. November SAT test scores will arrive too late to be considered for merit-based scholarships but can be used for January 30 admission decisions.
October ACT Plus Writing test results will not be ready until November, which is too late for consideration for merit-based scholarships or applications submitted by October 15 for a December 15 decision. We will be able to use October scores for January 30 admission decisions.
Please note, NC State Admissions only accepts test scores sent to us directly from the testing agencies. We will not accept scores reported on school transcripts or otherwise not sent to us directly from a testing agency.
Freshmen applying for spring admission (domestic)
Application Deadline: November 1
Decisions are posted as files are completed and applications are reviewed. We begin reviewing applications on October 15.
Note: Freshman applicants who were denied on their initial application for admission should complete 30 hours of transferable credits at another school before reapplying as a transfer student. If you were denied fall admission and apply again for the spring semester without having improved your academic credentials, your application will likely be denied.
College of Design - Freshman and transfer students (domestic and international)
The College of Design accepts freshman and transfer applicants for the fall semester only. Do not pick a Design major if you are applying for spring or summer admission.
- November 1 Deadline for Design majors (freshman and transfer), for all international applicants seeking fall admission to any major within the College of Design, and for domestic freshmen to be considered for campus merit-based scholarships
- February 1 deadline for domestic freshman applicants for the Design Studies major
- April 1 deadline for domestic transfer applicants for the Design Studies major

Studio majors
Most College of Design majors require extensive studio coursework. Studio majors include: Architecture, Art & Design, Graphic Design, and Industrial Design. To be considered for admission in one of these majors it must be listed as your first choice, and your application must be submitted and complete (all required items received) by November 1. You must also submit a separate essay and online portfolio by November 1. - Applications for studio majors will first be reviewed by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. If your application is academically competitive it will be forwarded to the College of Design for consideration.
- You will be notified in January by the College of Design to inform you whether your application is still under review for your first choice.
- You will receive an admission decision regarding your Design application at the end of March.
-
Non-studio major
Design Studies is offered as a non-studio major. It does not require a portfolio and follows the regular application deadlines. Design Studies can be selected as a second choice major.
Transfer students (domestic)
Fall admission: April 1
Spring admission: November 1
- Transfer applicants for the fall semester must apply by April 1, even if they will not meet admission requirements until the end of the spring semester. All documents available at the time the application is submitted should be sent by that same deadline. We will let you know if we need additional information before making a final decision.
- We recommend that transfer applicants apply well before the deadline, in order to assure processing more quickly. Applications and supporting documents for the spring semester must be submitted by November 1.
- Applicants who submit documentation after the deadline may find that when the application is complete, space is no longer available in their chosen curriculum.
- Work in progress during the fall semester cannot be considered for admission to the spring semester.
- Separate deadlines pertain to international transfer applicants.
- Notifications regarding transfer decisions are posted as files are completed and applications are reviewed.
