GETTING A TUTOR: POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
How do I apply?
Applying is easy. Simply go to Tutoring Services in UC 215 and fill out an "Application for Tutoring Services" form.
Who qualifies?
Any undergraduate student currently enrolled in classes at CMU, regardless of overall GPA or current average in class.
Can I get a tutor for any class?
Any undergraduate student currently enrolled in classes at CMU, regardless of overall GPA or current average in class.
Am I assured of always getting a tutor?
We can assure that we will make every effort to find a suitable tutor.
How much tutoring can I have?
CMU will pay for a maximum of 3 hours of tutoring (not including walk-in) sessions per week. Please note: that is 3 hours total and not per class.
When does tutoring begin and end?
Ordinarily, tutoring begins the second full week of classes and ends one week before final exam week. Tutors also may need time to prepare for finals. Tutors may, however, decide to tutor longer if they so choose.
How do I make sure it is only me and the tutor and no other students?
That will not be possible, unless you are paying for the tutor yourself. We always try to have other students join you when you are being tutored. Tutoring always takes place in small groups when possible (3-4 students).
When and where do I meet my tutor?
The student is responsible for contacting the tutor. Please be aware you may have to adjust your personal schedule to accommodate the tutor and the rest of small group members. Tutoring takes place in a public area on campus, preferably in small groups.
What are my responsibilities?
Simply put, be prepared (TUTORS WILL NOT DO YOUR WORK FOR YOU). They are not responsible for you getting better grades. You are expected to come to your tutoring session, having read and studied the material AND having prepared questions ahead of time.

BECOMING A TUTOR: POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
- Any undergraduate or graduate CMU student may apply to be a tutor. The applicant must have a MINIMUM overall GPA of 3.0 and have earned a grade of no lower than a B+ in the course to be tutored.
- Secondly, prospective tutors need approval from the department in which the class is offered or Academic Assistance Programs.
- Tutors may work up to 40 hours per week if there is student demand, if they choose.
- Tutors are expected to set up days and times to meet with students and should group them to meet at the same time when possible.
- Tutors may set a limit on how many hours they are willing to work if less than 40 hours is desirable and/or necessary.
Process for becoming a tutor:
- Pick up an application from the Academic Assistance office, UC 215.
- Fill it out and have it signed by the chair of the department or the professor, unless you already have prior approval via faculty recommendation.
- Return the completed and signed form to the Academic Assistance office, UC 215, and set up an interview with the coordinator of Tutoring Services.
- Tutors are required to attend update sessions as scheduled throughout the semester.
- Please Note: Students who are already employed by the University may not work more than a total of 40 hours per week when combining that job and tutoring.
Just a reminder ..... there are hundreds of study skills and tutorial sites on the internet. We would suggest you follow sites sponsored by institutions of higher education.
