The community and school health programs offer two majors: the Bachelor of Science in Applied Science (B.S.A.S.) and the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S. in Ed.). These programs can be completed in eight semesters if students average 16 hours per semester. The program also offers a minor in public health and a minor in community health. The community health program contributes to the University’s General Education Requirements by offering HSC 1568 Healthy Lifestyles, which meets General Education Requirement 9: Personal and Social Responsibility. The community health program participates in the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) by offering the BS/MD Community Health Practicum course for the NEOUCOM Youngstown State University campus. To be admitted to either the community health or school health program a student must have a minimum GPA of 2.0. To continue enrollment in the community health major and the first two years of the school health major, students must maintain a 2.0. After 62 semester hours, school health majors must maintain the grade point requirements of the college of education. If a student falls below a 2.0 GPA, the student can only re-apply to either major after a minimum GPA of 2.0 has been achieved.
The B.S.A.S. in community health prepares the student to become a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). Graduates are prepared to carry out the seven areas of responsibility required by CHES certification, which are: assess individual and community health needs; plan and implement effective health education and health promotion programs; coordinate and manage the provision of health education and promotion services; effectively communicate health and health education needs, concerns and resources; and conduct program evaluation.
The program integrates classroom and experiential community-based learning in many of its courses. Community health graduates are employed in public health agencies, volunteer and private health and community organizations, hospitals and other health and care settings, local, state Health Professions 178 The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services and national governmental agencies, and business and industrial settings. A minor, consisting of 18 credits in another program of study is required for the community health major. Useful minors include: non-profit leadership, social work, nutrition, criminal justice, environmental studies, business information systems, sociology, psychology,and desktop publishing or an associate degree in one of the allied health professions.
The B.S. in Education enables graduates to receive licensure for multi-age school health teaching pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Students seeking this licensure must apply for upper-division status in the Beeghly College of Education upon completion of 62 semester hours.

Electives are taken to complete the 124 semester hours for the B.S.A.S. in community health degree.
