Easy, Powerful Access High-Quality Relevent Corporate Research

Smart bioscience leaders are always looking for an advantage, whether to boost profits, lower overhead or drive innovation.

The BioSciences Management Initiatives offers firms access to that kind of advantage. Through its MBA program in BioSciences at the Jenkins Graduate School of Business—the only one of its kind in the country—students design and execute strategic research programs on behalf of participating companies. This makes high quality corporate research affordable, allowing firms to discover untapped resources of knowledge.

This feature of the Initiative, called the Student Practica, is a graduation requirement for many MBA students. Most of our students are older and more experienced than students in many other MBA concentrations, with about 85 percent of them currently working in biosciences firms.

Here’s how the student practica works.

It’s a classic win-win: A biosciences firm with a current business challenge or promising opportunity contacts us. We match them with a student team, who then works for approximately 13 weeks to produce professional-quality, data-driven research and recommendations on how to apply the results to the company’s specific challenges. Students gain valuable experience and exposure to new contacts, while companies receive a deliverable that on the open market would likely have cost them thousands of dollars.

That’s an incredible bargain given that students use research tools that some companies haven’t even heard of yet. These include new business analytics software, NC State University’s cloud computing center and a vast, multi-campus library system.

In the four-year history of the BioSciences Management Initiative, approximately 35 student practica have been completed on behalf of corporate clients. As the BioSciences MBA enrollment grows, so too will the number of these student research projects.

Our curriculum (and students) works with many other programs both within and outside of the College of Management.
