Internships/Practicums

Developing an Internship/Practicums

An academic internship or practicum is a form of experiential education that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skill development in a professional setting. Students earn academic credit, or there is some other connection to a degree-granting, educational institution. This work/learning arrangement is overseen by a faculty member of Mansfield University and by a designated employee of an organization. The internship/practicum is usually the length or equivalent of an academic term, may be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid. An integral component of the experience that distinguishes it from other types of work is one or more forms of structured and deliberate reflection contained within learning agendas or objectives.
*Adapted from publications by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) and the Cooperative Education & Internship Association (CEIA).

Conditions Specific to Mansfield University
  • In a credit-bearing internship/practicum, one credit hour is equated to 40 clock hours of supervised experience.
  • Up to 12 academic credits of internship/practicum experience may count toward graduation requirements.
  • Credit-bearing (or for-credit) internships/practicums always require approval from the student's academic department to confirm the internship/practicum is relevant and substantive to the student's academic learning. Students are expected to secure for-credit internships/practicums during the semester prior to the academic semester of service (April for Fall semester; November for Spring semester, March for summer session). Please keep this timeline in mind when requesting a student.
  • For an internship/practicum to be approved, the sponsoring organization must provide bona fide learning objectives, and the scope of the experience must be substantial (not simply clerical work, for example). A job description detailing the expected work the student will perform is required as part of the review to determine credit status.

Want to develop an internship, but don't know where to start? The Career Center has developed an Employer's Guide to Developing an Internship. Please contact us at 570-662-4133 with any questions or for individualized assistance.
