Welcome to the COEHP Web Site from Dean Buckner
Thank you so for visiting our web site! Please pause a bit before moving on. Let me introduce you to our College of Education and Health Professions.
At first glance, our College would seem to be a very complicated organization. One may note that junior-year nursing students are off to clinical in September when, a month or so later, early childhood faculty begin planning for the annual Summer Spectacular program. Similarly, in November Health Science faculty are guiding undergraduate seniors organizing a health expo in rural Calhoun County south of campus, while community counseling interns wrap up their end-of-program tasks in any array of community agencies.
Complicated? Perhaps. Yet I prefer thinking of what we do in our College as complex, not complicated. We have much that links us together, even as we recognize big differences between a student teacher in a seventh-grade math classroom, a working nurse enrolled in the “RN-to-BSN” program, and young men and women conducting experiments in our Human Performance Laboratory.
So even though there are striking differences in what we do in the College, we are bound together by three important qualities. What I believe ties us together is our professionalism, our excellent and timely teaching, and our commitment to human service.
We are a professional College, which is to say that our faculty members are credentialed, our students seek a license to practice a specialized vocation, and our programs are subject to ongoing review by distinguished national accrediting bodies.
We are excellent teachers. Our professors establish and maintain close contacts with our students, and our classes – whether traditional, blended, or on-line – exploit contemporary technology and research-based methodology
Finally, we are committed to human service. Our students don’t major in nursing because of flexible working hours, nor do they anticipate moving to easy street after taking early retirement from the classroom. No, they are “people people,” and they are called to serve others, whether children, adolescents, or adults.
If you are a bit idealistic, if you believe that we are all bound to help others, we would like to meet you. I believe that our recent graduates are better men and women for having studied at Columbus State University. Perhaps you--or your son or daughter--will join us and find that out first hand. We are ready to welcome you!
