Welcome Back! 2012 Spring Semester News

If you have already been upgraded to Windows 7, the new deployment has brought a few changes to your desktop environment.

CT has been deploying some “best practice” security measures with the rollout of the new systems. This is in response to a recent PASSHE security audit that was performed here at Mansfield. Due to the amount of confidential information available via a computer account / connection, CT has an obligation to safeguard the data as best we can.  Therefore, CT is now enforcing a lockout on workstations after a period of inactivity. CT has adopted a university-wide standard of 15 minutes for staff and faculty workstations. CT has not implemented a lockout on labs and classroom computers.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete-2 When you are alerted by email to change your Active Directory password, and you are logged into your campus Windows 7 machine, you should follow the on screen directions presented to you on the password change log-in screen.Specifically,  you should change your password using the “Ctrl+Alt+Delete” key combination to change your password, rather than online interface.  This will insure you will have full access to email, shared drives, applications, etc. without the need to reboot your machine.

Vostro 460 Desktop CT will start a rollout of new computers through the Spring 2012 semester. CT has received funding for the purchase 140 new Dell Vostro 460 computers. CT hopes to work with department heads in an attempt to determine a schedule and priority requirements for the installation of the new equipment. The target date for completion of this project is May 15th, 2012.

mystica_USB_Flash_Drive All computer users should be sure that the mission-critical data residing on your university-owned computer is backed up on a regular basis. Hardware failures can occur without notice so it is critical for you to have a backup copy of your important files. There are several ways to back up your system. You can save to an external hard drive, or use a USB (thumb) drive. It is important to know where your data is stored (usually My Documents), and then make sure that you have backed up your data on a regular basis. Please consult with your CT technician about CT-recommended backup solutions and steps that you can initiate to make sure your data is backed up.

CT wishes the Mansfield University students, faculty and staff  a great 2012. Check back to our news site during the semester for more technology news and updates!

Web News: Content Management System Upgrade

As some of you may have heard, we will be moving forward this semester and replacing the HotBanana Content Management System (CMS) with a new CMS – CommonSpot.  The new CMS will have more features than HotBanana – such as the ability to edit and resize photos without the use of another application, a true WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) interface, a friendlier user interface, and other features you will learn about soon.

In addition the University web site is moving out to the “cloud”, which simply means that it will be hosted at several off campus locations to guarantee 24/7 availability, even in the case of an on-campus emergency or power failure.

We have started the process of building new templates and widgets for our site in the new CMS, and over the next two months, we will be contacting your department to set up a meeting so we can discuss our migration plan for your site and to start getting you acquainted with CommonSpot.  We have also created a new Web Lab in Memorial 210 which will be available for training on CommonSpot during the transition. Stay tunes for more details!

My Mansfield Today Landing Page

On Monday October 24th, changed the My Mansfield landing page to a new, updated page with the same basic layout as the University home page, but geared toward the campus community. We are calling this page “My Mansfield Today”.

The University main page, which was released in the spring, was developed with recruitment as its main focus and purpose. The new My Mansfield Today page is designed with the campus community as its focus. The header section is exactly the same as the University home page.  The second level of navigation, which on the home page is aimed toward prospective students (“What Can I Study?”, “What Does it Cost”, “Visit Mansfield”, etc.), now features the links that appear below the main photo rotation on the home page (Current Students, Faculty and Staff, etc.).

mutoday The left column of the main body has the big “Blue Button” link to login to My Mansfield, and a navigation menu with links to login to Desire2Learn, Email, WebAdvisor and other campus systems. Under that is a listing of the Academic Calendar.

The top photo feature will include a photo rotation of upcoming campus events. Below that is tabbed navigation for “Today@MU”(Events Calendar and Cancellation Announcements), “Campus News Feed”, “Daily Digest”, and “Mounties Athletics”. Below the features will be additional content blocks where we can feature other upcoming announcements and events.

If your University computer currently has its browser(s) home page set to the University main page, we encourage you to switch over to the My Mansfield Today page by browsing to http://my.mansfield.edu and making it your browser new home page!

Alertus Desktop Emergency Notification

Campus Technology has received a grant for AlertusTech’s desktop alerting software.  University workstations (including labs and classrooms) have already received this software, which displays as a yellow icon in the lower right of your monitor, near the time.

As part of this grant, we have added the desktop alerting software for Mac and Windows to the free software downloads page on http://my.mansfield.edu.   Installing this to your home machine will allow you to receive emergency broadcast alerts while away from campus.

There are no personal details sent to or received from this software and only certain university personnel have the ability to trigger a broadcast alert.

Questions concerning the Alertus software can be directed to the helpdesk.

Broadcast Notification System Change

As part of the Windows7 migration CT has a new broadcast message system that will be installed on your desktops soon.  The Alertus software installation is very small and results in a yellow icon in the system tray (lower right, near the time).  In the event of an emergency, the software is activated and the alert will display, covering your screen.  You can clear the alert by clicking the green “Acknowledge” button.

This software will be installed via push to XP users, pre-installed for our win7 users and will soon be available for download for off-campus use for students, staff, and faculty.

Migration of the M:\ Drive (Windows 7 and Active Directory Upgrade)

In order to facilitate the move to Windows 7 and Active Directory Logons and away from WindowsXP and Novell Logins, we will need to complete a file share migration.  On October 2nd, CT will perform the migration and consequently begin to migrate users.

What this means to you:

On or after October 3rd, when you reboot and log in to your desktop with Netware, your M:\ drive will appear unchanged, but it will function differently.  When you click on the M:\ drive icon, you will be presented with a logon screen.  This login will be your full email address and password.

When your workstation is migrated to Windows 7 you will no longer have to do this.

Users with other netware drives (O:\, P:\, etc) will also be migrated after M:\ is complete.

Please contact the Helpdesk with questions or concerns.

Windows 7 Rollout

Campus Technologies has started to migrate our campus desktop from Windows XP, to Windows 7.  You may have noticed this in classrooms and on our lab PCs.  As part of this process, we will also be migrating our file server from Novell to Windows Active Directory.  What does this mean for faculty and staff? Well in the upcoming weeks, your building technician will be visiting you to upgrade your desktop to Windows 7.  When that happens, you will no longer be logging into your machine through Novell, but rather through Windows Active Directory.  The Active Directory username and password combination you will use is the same combo you use for campus email, My Mansfield, Desire2Learn, and PASSHE employee self service. Basically, you will now have one less password to remember.

We will keep you up to date and informed on when we are moving to specific areas on campus through here and our Windows 7 Rollout site.
