The Southern Academy for Literary Arts and Scholarly Research (SA) is pleased to announce the availability of four writer's fellowships for the academic year, 2012-2013. The deadline for fellowship applications is Monday, April 16, 2012. A description of the eligibility requirements, application process, and benefits of the writers' fellowships is provided below:
Description
The Southern Academy for Literary Arts & Scholarly Research at Georgia Perimeter College offers fellowships that provide the equivalent of one semester’s reassigned time for GPC faculty members engaged in extensive research and writing projects. The Southern Academy will award four fellowships each year based on a competitive application process. Details of that process are outlined below:
Eligibility
All tenure-track teaching faculty members at GPC are eligible to apply, apart from the following restrictions:
1. Applicants must not have received paid professional leave (“sabbatical”) within the past 5 years.
2. Applicants must not have held a Southern Academy or Writer's Institute Fellowship within the past 5 years.
3. Department chairs and other 12-month employees with faculty rank may not apply.
4. Members of the Southern Academy Advisory Committee are not eligible to apply.
Criteria
Applications for the Southern Academy Fellowships will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
1. Length. The proposed manuscript should be book or monograph-length.
2. Subject matter. The manuscript should be scholarly or creative in nature.
3. Originality. The manuscript should not have been previously published in its entirely, nor should it be a
revision of a previously published text. (NOTE: The manuscript also should not be a master’s thesis or
Ph.D. dissertation currently in progress for the purpose of fulfilling a degree requirement. However, the
committee may consider a project involving extensive revisions to an applicant’s thesis or dissertation in order
to submit that work for publication.)
4. Progress. The project should be a least 30% complete.
5. Quality. The manuscript should be of publishable quality.
Application packet
Applicants should submit the following materials to the Southern Academy, care of Liam Madden, Clarkston
Campus, CL 4110 no later than Monday, April 16th, 2012:
1. A 1-2 page narrative letter describing the project in detail and outlining the applicant’s plans for completing the
project. This letter should also address the applicant’s progress on the project to date, the value of the project to the
College and/or to the profession, and the project’s prospects for publication.
2. An updated CV in GPC Promotion/Tenure format.
3. A writing sample, not to exceed 20 pages, taken from the applicant’s project.
4. Evidence of publishability. (E.g., a letter from a publisher or agent, comments from reputable peer reviewers
outside the College, and/or analysis of similarities to the applicant’s previously published work.)
Expectations
The Southern Academy Fellowship recipient acknowledges the following expectations for the term of his or her fellowship:
1. The Fellow will continue to be housed on his or her home campus and should provide contact information to
his or her department chair and academic dean, as well as the Southern Academy Chair, during any
protracted absence.
2. The Fellow will devote at least the amount of time to the writing project that he or she would have spent
teaching.
3. The Fellow will submit an annual report covering the term of the Fellowship and be evaluated for that year.
This means he or she should engage in service and/or professional development commensurate with the
desired rating.
4. No later than six months following the end of the term, the Fellow should produce for the Committee’s review
a complete manuscript of publishable quality.
5. In the semester immediately following his or her term, the Fellow will present the results of the project to
interested faculty on Faculty Development Day.
6. During and after the term of the Fellowship, the Fellow will perform service for the Southern Academy in a
manner to be determined by the Fellow and the SA Chair. Such service could include participation in summer
institutes and other Academy activities, mentoring of future Fellows and/or membership on the Institute
Advisory Committee.
