Catalog Description   
Communication 1201 is an introductory course in oral communication, stressing the fundamental principles.  Special attention is given to critical thinking, global issues, the selection and organization of materials, and the presentation of individual speeches and group deliberations.
   
Expected Educational Results   
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:
A. Demonstrate the ability to deliver a speech that reflects the following:
• Appropriate audience analysis
• Selection of a speech topic that fits the assignment
• Presentation of an introduction that gets attention and clarifies the purpose of the speech
• Presentation of a body of a speech that includes appropriate support, clear transitions, and development of the speech purpose
• Presentation of a definite conclusion
• Use of vocal variety to present a speech in an enthusiastic and conversational manner
• Use of clear and appropriate language
• Use of effective nonverbal communication (eye contact, posture)
B. Construct an appropriate preparation outline and speaker's note cards.
C. Research global issues for in-class discussions and presentations.
D. Develop critical thinking skills through:
• Analyzing and effectively using ethos, source credibility; logos, logical appeal of a speaker,
and pathos emotional appeals
• Critiquing the evidence and reasoning in speeches of others

General Education Outcomes   
I. Learners develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in the following ways:
A. They develop their speaking skills through a variety of speaking activities. Emphasis is placed on the organization of material as well as on delivery skills.
B. They develop their listening skills through lecture and participation in panel discussions. Students are also required to be active listeners by critiquing other students' speeches.
C. They develop their reading comprehension skills by reading the text and handout materials. Students are required to conduct research for their speeches.
D. They develop writing skills by doing preparation outlines for their speeches.

II. Learners demonstrate effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the analysis and organization of materials for presentations.

III. Learners identify, analyze and evaluate global issues through oral presentations.

IV. Learners analyze competing values underlying contemporary issues through the process of organizing and developing group discussions, informative speeches and persuasive speeches.

Assessment of Outcome Objectives   
A. Course Grade
• Speeches, panel discussions, exams and other work as assigned by the instructor will be used to determine the course grade.
• Informative speeches, persuasive speeches, special occasion speeches and small group discussion will be used to evaluate public speaking skills, critical thinking skills, and awareness of global issues.
• Students will be required to address global issues in at least two presentations.

B. Departmental Assessment
Course assessment will be conducted every five years. The assessment will be designed to evaluate the students' knowledge of the subject.

C. Use of Assessment Results
The results of the assessment will be reviewed by the Communication Curriculum Committee for the purpose of recommending curriculum strategies and instructional changes. An analysis of the results along with a plan of action for recommended changes will be developed and shared with all speech faculty. These reports will be filed in the office of the Chair of the Communication Curriculum Committee.
