Course Title Clinical Dental Hygiene I
Prerequisite(s) BIOL 1612 and BIOL 1612L, each with a "C" or better
Corequisite(s) None Specified
This course is a laboratory/clinical introduction to the application of infection and disease prevention methods, the dental hygiene process of care, and clinical instrumentation and assessment techniques.
Expected Educational Results
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:
1. In the clinical setting, seat themselves and their patients in the optimum position for dental hygiene treatment delivery.
2. Practice asepsis and effective infection control.
3. Demonstrate correct principles of instrumentation.
4. Maintain their own oral health and that of their patients.
5. Take patient vital signs.
6. Record patient medical and dental histories.
7. Look up medications in PDR and other references.
General Education Outcomes
I. This course addresses the general education outcome relating to communications by requiring students to communicate professionally while using correct dental terminology.
II. This course addresses the general education outcome regarding problem solving by presenting students with patient case scenarios for which they must propose solutions.
III. This course addresses the general education outcome of application of scientific inquiry by requiring students to synthesize hypothetical data regarding aspects of patient information into patient treatment data.
IV. This course addresses the general education outcome regarding basic concepts of wellness by encouraging students to grasp the wellness concepts, which they promote for their patients for themselves.

Assessment of Outcome Objectives
I. COURSE GRADE
A. Each lab activity is graded on a percentage basis. Course grade is computed by averaging these scores.
B. There is no final exam.
II. DEPARTMENTAL ASSESSMENT
The dental hygiene department maintains full accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation; additionally by reporting students' pass rates for state/regional/national licensing exams, the department will be able to assess the effectiveness of this course as well as the whole curriculum.
USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
The faculty functions as the curriculum committee, along with science department faculty, and, as necessary, faculty from other departments are used to assist in periodic reviews of the curriculum. The department also articulates with a Department Advisory Committee, composed of members from the practicing dental and dental hygiene community, to maintain a current picture of the needs of current graduates/practitioners.
