Catalog Description
A survey of important works of British literature from the Romantic era to the present.

Expected Educational Results
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:

Identify major themes in the literature of the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern periods;
Know the major literary genres of the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern Periods;
Have the ability to apply the process of literary analysis to a literary work from the periods covered in the course.

General Education Outcomes
I. The course addresses the general education outcome relating to effective communication through listening, reading, writing, and speaking as follows:

Students read poetry and prose aloud in class and privately.
Students listen to lectures and act as an audience through responses.
Students listen to oral reports and tapes as well as films and recordings of plays.
Students read primary sources in textbook and secondary sources in the library as well as critical papers.
Students take notes, respond to essay questions, complete annotated bibliographies, and write essay papers.
Students speak in class through class discussion and student oral reports.
II. This course addresses the general education outcome relating to effective individual and group problem-solving and critical thinking skills as follows:
The students interpret works of literature.
The students discuss published interpretations.
The students participate in class discussions.
The students practice critical thinking through researching and analyzing published critical articles and then discuss articles in class.
III. This course addresses the general education outcome relating to responding to and making defensible judgments about various artistic works.
Designed to enable students to judge aesthetic literary works, this course enables the students to make informed judgments beyond mere interpretation

Course Content
The instructor will use selections from the periods covered by the course to acquaint the student with the following genres:

Exams, papers, tests, and a final exam by individual instructors will be used to determine the course grade according to the following:

Tests and a final examination prepared by individual instructors will be used to determine the course grade.
Each test and the final will require but not be limited to essay responses to questions designed for the demonstration of skills in analysis or synthesis.
Short answer and objective responses may be included.


A critical analysis paper(s) (using secondary sources) of one or more aspects of a representative work or works of literature will be require of each student to develop skills in research, analysis, and synthesis.

The course grade will be computed as follows:

Tests and Classroom Performance 55%
Writing Assignment(s) 25%
Final Examination 20%


This course will be assessed every five years in the most appropriate semester for the individual campus. Every student in English 2122 will be required to complete a prepared course assessment instrument that is part objective and part essay.
During each semester (fall and spring) of the assessment year, the objective Personal Response Assessment questionnaire will be administered just prior to or at the time of the final exam for purposes of assessing effective learning.
Each student will be required to write at least one in-class, literary analysis essay to be duplicated for purposes of assessment of cognitive learning.
During the assessment semester, the Personal Response Assessment questionnaires for the academic year and duplicate copies of the essays will be read and evaluated by the English 2122 committee and the results reported to the Humanities Division.
The results of the assessment instrument will be read by the members of the English 2122 assessment committee.
The student responses to the objective portion will be tabulated.
The essay responses from randomly selected students will be read and evaluated by the committee.
The results will be analyzed by the members of the committee and the results reported to the Humanities Division.
The data collected will be used to discuss any implications for change in English 2122.
