Students use college-level materials as they develop the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills they will use in their academic work. They demonstrate understanding and respond critically to these materials in speech and writing, including reports, essays, and a short documented paper.
Expected Educational Results
By the end of the semester, students will be able to
A. Read college-level texts and
1. Respond appropriately to comprehension questions.
2. Respond appropriately to questions requiring critical thinking
B. Write an organized essay in response to fiction and non-fiction readings and to other course materials.
C. Use context to determine word meanings.
D. Use these study skills as they read a text (including)
4. Writing marginal notes
E. Discuss with others ideas relevant to the course content.
F. Write a short documented paper using correct MLA or APA format.
General Education Outcomes
A. All English as a Second Language courses at Georgia Perimeter College directly address the general education outcome that states, “Students will communicate effectively through oral communication, reading, and writing.” In this course, students will develop communication skills in the following ways:
1. Students will read college-level texts organized around a theme or themes.
2. Students regularly will participate in small-group and class discussion and periodically will prepare individual oral presentations.
3. Students will practice active listening/notetaking.
4. Students will respond to reading in extemporaneous writing and in more formal papers.
B. Students in this course will demonstrate critical thinking skills in the following ways:
1. Students will learn interpretive reading skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, inferencing, and dealing with metaphorical language.
2. Students will learn to take a position relative to the ideas in their reading in writing such as journal keeping, critical analysis, or reader response papers.
3. Students will synthesize information from several sources in preparing a short documented paper in this course.
4. Students analyze the relevance and reliability of sources they locate, determining their value in answering the research questions they have proposed.
C. Students in this course will locate, organize, and analyze information through the use of a variety of computer applications in the following ways:
1. Students learn to navigate library databases (GIL, GALILEO, PROQUEST, etc.) as they search for information for a research project related to course content.
2. Students learn to use reliable search engines on the Internet as they search for information for the research project.
3. Students use word processing computer skills as they integrate information from sources into an organized documented paper.
Thematically related materials to include short and long fiction and non-fiction readings as well as non-print resources will form the content of the course. Themes and materials will vary, but all classes will include the following:
A. 1. Extensive reading on the theme. Films may also form part of the authentic materials of the course.
B. 2. Vocabulary study based on the readings and other materials.
C. 3. Class discussion in whole-class and/or seminar formats and individual oral reports.
D. 4. Journal writing and/or other free writing activities.
E. 5. Text-based writing: notetaking, paraphrasing, summarizing.
F. 6. Essay writing in response to the readings or other resources. In connection with this writing, students will learn
1. Prewriting, writing, revising, and editing strategies.
2. Ways to incorporate quotations and paraphrases in their writing.
3. Punctuation as it relates to documentation.
Assessment of Outcome Objectives
A. Course Grade
The course grade will be computed as follows:
1. Midterm and Final Exams 40%
2. All other written and oral course work 60%
B. Departmental Assessment
This course will be assessed one semester out of every five years. As part of that assessment, students will be required to complete an objective test with questions based on one previously unread non-fiction reading selection and one previously unread fiction selection.
C. Use of Assessment Findings
The Integrated Skills Committee will analyze the information gathered from the assessment and revise the course outline and course syllabus accordingly. The assessment findings also may be the subject of professional development discussions regarding instructional improvement and curriculum change.
