Catalog Description
With classes often conducted in a seminar format, this course provides an introduction to important academic skills in higher education.  Though primarily designed to enhance the academic and social integration of first year and returning students, it can be beneficial for all students.  This course assists students’ adjustment to college, increasing their understanding of the learning process, and helps develop the study skills that will enhance academic performance.  The course is required for students who place into two Learning Support courses at the lowest level (READ 0097, ENGL 0098, or MATH 0097).

Expected Educational Results
As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
2. Describe personal values as they relate to the purpose of higher education.
3. Demonstrate effective goal-setting techniques
4. Identify academic strengths and weaknesses
5. Describe how values, goals, and needs correlate to academic success and personal career plans
6. Describe how applying the principles of teaching and learning styles enhance academic success
7. Utilize systemic strategies for note taking, textbook reading, listening, testing and managing time
8. Use college resources and services
9. Demonstrate involvement in college and community life

Assessment of Outcome Objectives
A. COURSE GRADE

Class participation, tests, projects, and written and oral assignments will be used to determine the course grade.

Note:  A student missing 10% of classes before the mid-point of the semester will be withdrawn.  After mid-point, a student who has missed 20% of classes since the beginning of the semester will be withdrawn.

B. College wide assessment

Because this course is not the offering of any single department or division and potentially involves personnel from all department, it will be assessed in the spring semester every three years by a multi-campus committee chaired by the college-wide HEDS Coordinator.

This committee will assess the strengths and weaknesses of the course.  (Statistics may be requested to help assess HEDS 1011 influence on student retention.)

USE OF ASSESSMENT

The multi-campus committee chaired by the coordinator will analyze three-year findings to determine curriculum changes.  Results of these findings will be chaired with current and former instructors of HEDS 1011.
