(MUSA 2739 Independent Study)
Composition may be elected upon presentation of adequate skills and knowledge to warrant admission into this course. Although the bulk of the student's work is devoted to original compositions for all media, analysis and consequent imitative studies are required. Consult the department chair to determine whether MUSC 2739 or MUSA 2739 is appropriate.

Expected Educational Results   
As a result of completing this course, the student will have:
· Completed at least two compositions for different media with all score and parts in performance-ready status
· Analyzed and listened to assigned repertoire to gain more knowledge of contemporary music composition
· Explored the various contemporary compositional techniques
General Education Outcomes   
As a result of completing this course, the student will have:
· Gained a knowledge of score and part preparation
· Explored a variety of formal possibilities and mediums of composition
· Completed compositions which are ready for public performance

Course Content   
Topics and assignments are individually tailored to each student's needs and portfolio of compositions and assessed potential.
Assessment of Outcome Objectives   

o Punctual completion of the assigned compositions in time for rehearsal and public performance (essential in the training of a composer)
o Appearance of the final manuscript and parts
o Ability to take constructive criticism and accept direction (The craft and technique at this early stage are weighted more heavily than the actual quality of the final composition.)

Performance of the completed composition(s) in a public performance gives the student true feedback as to the positive and negative aspects of the process.
The advancement of composition students at their four-year institution upon transfer will reflect the quality of our course and impact the future structure of the course content.
