Course Title Pediatric Nursing Concepts
Prerequisite(s) BIOL 1913, BIOL 1913L, NURS 1921, NURS 1930 (for LPNs NURS 1926), each with a "C" or better
Corequisite(s) NURS 2922 and NURS 2924
Catalog Description
This course focuses on the application of the nursing process in the promotion of health and the prevention/management of illness in the child-rearing family.  Emphasis is placed on the promotion of health and management of illness and complications during childhood.  Students will have the opportunity to utilize the nursing process in a variety of family and pediatric settings. Concepts introduced in prior nursing courses will be expanded and integrated with diverse populations.  This course includes classroom, clinical and community experiences.  

Expected Educational Results
At the end of the semester, while caring for the childrearing families, the student will be able to:

1. Function in the role of the nurse as a provider of care, manager of care, and member within the discipline of nursing.
2. Discuss the trends related to the development of Child Health and Family-Centered care within the discipline of nursing.
3. Apply the concept of caring in fostering parent-child bonding and cultivating parenting skills
4. Utilize the nursing process in applying previously learned and new concepts in the provision of care for families with children experiencing selected conditions.
5. Incorporate the concept of the health-illness continuum in planning care for the family.
6. Incorporate the concept of community-based nursing into the care of the family.
7. Establish priorities for nursing diagnoses and outcomes based on Maslow's hierarchy to meet physical and psychosocial needs.
8. Integrate principles of growth and development related to the care of the infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age and adolescent as holistic beings.
9. Relate principles of nutrition and diet therapy to growth and development needs of the infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age and adolescent client.
10. Adapt pharmacologic and math principles to the care of families.
11. Examine the impact of illness, hospitalization and separation on the family.
12. Explore the impact of loss and grief on the family.
13. Apply critical thinking skills to the care of families in diverse health care/community settings.
14. Incorporate the concept of Family Theory in planning care for the family.
15. Adapt nursing care to the cultural, religious and spiritual backgrounds of the family.
16. Utilize the principles of therapeutic communication while interacting with families.
17. Utilize principles of patient education to prevent illness and promote and maintain the health of families.
18. Apply previously learned and new nursing skills and technologies to the care of childrearing families.  
19. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary health care team in the planning and provision of care to families.
20. Relate legal and ethical principles to the care of childrearing families.

General Education Outcomes
I. OUTCOME:  “The student will communicate effectively through oral, communication, reading, and writing.”
Skill method:
a. participation and discussion in class and in pre- and post-conferences in the clinical setting

II. OUTCOME:  “The student will demonstrate effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”
Skill method:
a. make  care decisions that are based on data analysis

III. OUTCOME:  ‘The student will understand basic scientific theories and apply scientific inquiry in a variety of subjects.”
Skill method:
The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of scientific theories by developing and initiating plans of patient/client care are reflective of one’s holistic needs (physiological, psychological, spiritual, sociological and cultural).
IV. OUTCOME:  “The student will identify and apply the basic concepts of wellness.”
Skill method:
a. develop and initiate health promotion activities in the community.
b. provide  health teaching in the health care setting
V. OUTCOME:  “The student will apply the knowledge of personal, societal, and cultural development to living and working in a culturally diverse community.”
Skill method:
a. develop a plan of care that is based on cultural practices
b. develop a professional working relationship with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds
VI. OUTCOME: “The student will demonstrate ability to use technology in any setting.
Skill method:
The student will demonstrate the ability to use technology through use of computer systems in various settings.

2. Health promotion of the child and family
3. Maintenance and restoration of child health

Assessment of Outcome Objectives
Students must meet all course objectives and requirements of NURS 2927 in order to pass the course.  In order to satisfactorily meet course requirements the student must have:
a. An exam average of 'C' (75).  No rounding will be utilized in the calculation of the final course grade, and
b. Score at the national average or above on the ERI Child Health standardized test and
c. Satisfactory performance in every clinical experience and assignment.
