Course Title Snow Skiing

Catalog Description
This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic skills of snow skiing.  Basic instruction will be given at the college with practical experience taking place at one ski area in North Carolina or North Georgia.

Ski Everyone by Jim Cottrell, Hunter Textbooks Inc., (newest edition).

Expected Educational Results
After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Define appropriate terms for the sport of skiing
2. Identify a general knowledge of proper ski equipment, and places to ski in the south
3. Demonstrate the basic skills of turns, stops, slides, and techniques for getting on and off lifts
4. Describe proper safety and etiquette on the slopes

General Education Outcomes
I. This course addresses General Education Outcome number nine “to apply the basic concepts of health and wellness and utilize activities to promote health and fitness”.

Course Content
11. Learn to take care of yourself
2. The well-balanced stance
3. The better you ski, the more fun you have
4. Four basic skills
5. Simulating the motions of skiing
6. Exercise to develop ski technique
7. Ski sense, courtesy, and safety
8. Ski equipment (boots, bindings, poles)
9. Beginner fundamentals (falling down, getting up, walking, side step turning, around traverse and side slip)
10. Riding lifts (rope, T-bar, double chair, triple and quad chair)

Assessment of Outcome Objectives
The course grade will be determined by written exams, sport and/or fitness-related skills test and pre and post cardiorespiratory test scores.  When appropriate, opportunities for extra credit will be offered to students, the value of which to be determined by the instructor.
1. At least one written exam is required.  The written exam will be valued at no less than 20% and no more than 50% of the total grade.
2. Competencies must be demonstrated by students in sport or fitness-related activities specific to the class.  Sport or fitness-related skills tests will be valued at no less than 35% and no more than 65% of the total grade.

A common written final exam will be administered every five years. The test items will be directed to the expected educational results of the course. Additionally, common sport or fitness-related skill tests will be administered specific to the course. An item analysis will be completed on these test items administered.

A departmental committee will review the item analysis to determine 1) if the test questions were appropriate for assessing the desired educational outcomes, 2) if the level of student success was achieved, 3) if a revision of course instruction to enhance student achievement is needed, and 4) a specific time line for implementation of recommended changes.
