Course Title   Beginning Swimming

Catalog Description   
This is a basic swimming course for the non-swimmer or the weak swimmer.  Emphasis is placed on helping students learn how to swim and to sustain themselves in a survival position until assistance is available.

REQUIRED TEXT
Swimming by Betty J. Vickers and William Vincent, Brown and Benchmark Publishers (newest edition).

Expected Educational Results   
After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Successfully perform (prone) front and (supine) back floats
2. Successfully execute the elementary backstroke, front crawl, and the back crawl
3. Successfully tread water using proper foot and hand motions
4. Demonstrate how to enter the water feet first and resurface to a swimming position
5. Turn over from a front floating/swimming position to a back float/swimming position and then from a back floating/swimming position to front floating/swimming position
6. Have an understanding of the terminology used in swimming
7. Understand the basic concept of safety and values of swimming
8. Improve their cardiorespiratory fitness level

General Education Outcomes   
I. This course addresses General Education Outcome number nine “to apply the basic concepts of health and wellness and utilize activities to promote health and fitness”.
   
Course Content   
1. Rules of safety in swimming
2. Brief history of swimming and definitions of terms
3. Beginning techniques for non swimmers
4. Basic swimming techniques (floats, breath control, treading water, turning over, kicks)
5. Basic swimming strokes (elementary backstroke, front crawl, back crawl)
6. Cardiorespiratory Activities
7. Pre and post testing for cardiorespiratory endurance

Assessment of Outcome Objectives   
A. COURSE GRADE
The course grade will be determined by written exams, sport and/or fitness-related skills test and pre and post cardiorespiratory test scores.  When appropriate, opportunities for extra credit will be offered to students, the value of which to be determined by the instructor.
1. At least one written exam is required.  The written exam will be valued at no less than 20% and no more than 50% of the total grade.
2. Competencies must be demonstrated by students in sport or fitness-related activities specific to the class.  Sport or fitness-related skills tests will be valued at no less than 35% and no more than 65% of the total grade.
3. Cardiorespiratory fitness activities will be included in all classes in addition to other fitness and/or sport-related activities specific to the class.  Pre and post testing for cardiorespiratory fitness will be administered to all students.  Pre and post testing for cardiorespiratory fitness will be conducted according to the protocols for the 1-Mile Walk Test, the 3-Minute Step Test or the Astrand-Ryhming Test.  Pre and Post testing scores will be valued at no less than 15% and no more than 30% of the total grade.
B. DEPARTMENTAL ASSESSMENT
A common written final exam will be administered every five years. The test items will be directed to the expected educational results of the course. Additionally, common sport or fitness-related skill tests will be administered specific to the course. An item analysis will be completed on these test items administered.

USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
A departmental committee will review the item analysis to determine 1) if the test questions were appropriate for assessing the desired educational outcomes, 2) if the level of student success was achieved, 3) if a revision of course instruction to enhance student achievement is needed, and 4) a specific time line for implementation of recommended changes.
