Catalog Description
This course is structured to provide the student the opportunity to develop the five basic swimming stokes, personal aquatic skills in survival techniques, and improve physical conditioning.

Expected Educational Results
After completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Show improvement of the 5 basic strokes (free, back side, breast, and elementary back stroke) 2. Perform basic personal survival techniques 3. Tread water in the deep end 4. Successfully execute an entry into the deep end of the pool and surface in one of the basic strokes. ( feet first or a dive) 5. Execute basic open turns at the wall 6. Understand personal pool safety. 7. List the components of a swimming fitness program and develop a total conditioning program

General Education Outcomes
I. This course addresses General Education Outcome number nine “to apply the basic concepts of health and wellness and utilize activities to promote health and fitness”.

Course Content
1. Review the basic skills of the elementary backstroke, front crawl, and the back crawl. 2. Standard swimming strokes of sidestroke and breaststroke. 3. Turns at the wall. 4. Beginning deep water entries, feet first or diving from the side of the pool. 5. Conditioning and fitness development.

Assessment of Outcome Objectives
A. COURSE GRADE The course grade will be determined by written exams, sport and/or fitness-related skills test and pre and post cardiorespiratory test scores. When appropriate, opportunities for extra credit will be offered to students, the value of which to be determined by the instructor. 1. At least one written exam is required. The written exam will be valued at no less than 20% and no more than 50% of the total grade. 2. Competencies must be demonstrated by students in sport or fitness-related activities specific to the class. Sport or fitness-related skills tests will be valued at no less than 35% and no more than 65% of the total grade. 3. Cardiorespiratory fitness activities will be included in all classes in addition to other fitness and/or sport-related activities specific to the class. Pre and post testing for cardiorespiratory fitness will be administered to all students. Pre and post testing for cardiorespiratory fitness will be conducted according to the protocols for the 1-Mile Walk Test, the 3-Minute Step Test or the Astrand-Ryhming Test. Pre and Post testing scores will be valued at no less than 15% and no more than 30% of the total grade. B. DEPARTMENTAL ASSESSMENT A common written final exam will be administered every five years. The test items will be directed to the expected educational results of the course. Additionally, common sport or fitness-related skill tests will be administered specific to the course. An item analysis will be completed on these test items administered. USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS A departmental committee will review the item analysis to determine 1) if the test questions were appropriate for assessing the desired educational outcomes, 2) if the level of student success was achieved, 3) if a revision of course instruction to enhance student achievement is needed, and 4) a specific time line for implementation of recommended changes.
