Catalog Description   
Students examine the principal religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and their impact on society.
Expected Educational Results   
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of several world religions in relation to the cultures that produced them.
Students will gain a comparative understanding of the religious experiences of the various communities represented by the world religions studied in the course.
Students will gain an appreciation for the diversity present within religious traditions, as well as across them.
Students will demonstrate the ability to engage world religions using the comparing and contrasting skills and critical thinking skills consistent with the tools of comparative religious studies.
Students will demonstrate the ability to critically engage world religions through activities such as class discussions, written assignments, site visits, and assessments.

Course Content   
The instructor will cover Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  Other traditions may be added at the instructor’s discretion.

• B.  Departmental Assessment
o Every three years students in all sections of Religion 1301 will respond to a prepared college assessment instrument, part objective and part essay.
• C.  Use of Assessment Findings
o The results of the assessment instrument will be reviewed by the Religion 1301 assessment committee.
o The student responses to the objective portion will be tabulated.
o The essay responses from randomly selected students will be read and evaluated by the committee.
o The results will be analyzed by the members of the committee and the results reported to the Humanities Division.
o The data collected will be used to discuss any implications for change in Religion 1301.
o Any suggestions regarding change will be forwarded to the Humanities Curriculum Committee.
