Since reading skills are fundamental to all academic learning, the Learning & Tutoring Center of the Dunwoody Campus has placed special emphasis on helping students become better readers. In conjunction with the instructional reading program housed in the Humanities Department, the Reading Center provides reading materials, computer programs, and a quiet space for students to focus on improving their reading skills. Whether a student needs to finish a reading assignment, work on increasing reading rate, or practice specific reading comprehension skills, the Reading Center offers a peaceful environment. Additionally, in the adjacent Writing Center, a number of tutors are available who can assist students when necessary.
Some programs students find useful include Comprehension Word Power, a software program available to students who need to increase speed and comprehension in reading, a new 3-level vocabulary program, Building/ Improving/ Advancing Vocabulary Skills, and an extensive collection of reading skills material, such as Essential Skills, books 10-20, and Reading For Understanding. Students who are preparing for the Compass or reviewing for the Regents' Test will find written and computer-based tests available for practice. Here is a more complete listing of the reading materials and programs offered to reading students. Also, the Decatur Campus LTC has Regents' Reading Exam videos available.
