History of the Learning & Tutoring Center at the Dunwoody Campus of Georgia Perimeter College
Former home of ISS in the B Building
The tutoring services currently offered in the Dunwoody Learning & Tutoring Center have come a long way. In the early 1980’s, math tutors worked in a small study room of the old library located in the B Building, while the Reading and Writing Lab was housed separately in a large room. In 1987, the two were combined, and after a short stay in a large windowless room in D Building, the services were separated again, moved back to the B Building, and settled into their own large rooms.
For almost 15 years, the popularity of the tutoring services steadily increased and many changes took place. In the late 80’s, the tutoring program was officially named “Instructional Support Services” as part of the Learning Support Program, and the school administration hired the first LTC Coordinator, Jimmie Caine. His successors were Sylvia Swiney and Sandra Rosseter. Because the constant growth of LTC necessitated more expansive facilities, on May 6, 2002, during Mrs. Rosseter’s tenure, LTC moved from the B Building to the top floor of the Learning Resource Center. This wonderful tutoring and learning environment, with its high ceilings, excellent lighting, spacious tutoring and studying rooms, and state-of-the-art furnishings and technology, encouraged a reinvigorating jumpstart into a new chapter of LTC history.
Cecile Allen, Math Lab Supervisor from 1992-2001, filled the role of LTC Coordinator for 3 years before retiring in July 2004. She began working in the Math Lab as a tutor in 1985. The current LTC Coordinator is Alan Craig, who taught math at GPC and tutored in the Math Lab of LTC before becoming the Coordinator.
