Course Title: English Composition I/English Composition II
Course Description:
English 1101 focuses on skills required for effective writing in a variety of contexts, with emphasis on exposition, analysis, and argumentation. The course also includes an introduction to a variety of research skills. Some sections of this course are taught with computer assistance in classrooms equipped with personal computers. Keyboarding experience will be useful but is not required.
ENGL 1101 Common Course Outline
English 1102 develops writing skills beyond the levels of proficiency required by ENGL 1101, emphasizes interpretation and evaluation, and incorporates more advanced research methods. A research paper is required. Some sections of this course are taught with computer assistance in classrooms equipped with personal computers. Keyboarding experience will be useful but is not required.

General Writing Rubric - The generic ENGL 1101/1102 grading rubric provided identifies the rhetorical qualities of an A paper, B paper, C paper, and D paper. The rubric is descriptive and identifies key qualities exhibited by papers demonstrating the applicable performance level.
Benchmark Papers
The 1101 and 1102 benchmark papers below provide examples of a ‘progression’ from a ‘D’ paper to an ‘A’ paper, illustrating the writing process. All papers are varying versions of the same paper; the assignment for the papers is also included. Each paper includes a brief "Note" justifying the paper’s grade.
