Georgia Perimeter College earned two of the Governor’s Commendation for Excellence in Customer Service Awards during a Jan. 21 ceremony in Atlanta. GPC Assistant Director of Photography Bill Roa and the GPC’s Public Safety “An Eye on Safety Team” were both honored by the Governor’s Office of Customer Service for providing exemplary customer service to Georgia’s citizens.

“I am humbled by the recognition,” Roa said. “I feel like I’m being recognized for just doing my job. Although it may seem that I’m going above and beyond, it comes from the heart. This is something I love doing and I love the people I’m doing it with.”

According to the Governor’s Office for Customer Service, Roa was recognized because of his “can-do attitude, putting everyone he photographs at ease. This not only is an art form, but also a science, as he exhibits outstanding customer service toward everyone he photographs.”

“Most employees do not have the opportunity to interact with all three groups (students, community partners and fellow employees), Bill serves all three groups on a daily basis,” said Jeff Tarnowski, GPC’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Bill is always professional, dedicated and friendly as he goes about his work. Most of the imagery that we see on the GPC website, in publications, brochures and marketing materials are created by Bill. What makes Bill such an outstanding example however, is not his professionalism or dedication, Bill goes the extra mile to be helpful to every person that he interacts with – whether it is a student, employee or donor.”

According GPC Director of Customer Service Fran Mohr, Roa also habitually serves outside the normal scope of his duties. He provides photographic coverage of the annual luncheon honoring the DeKalb County Police hosted by a local community group. He also works as a mentor for Hispanic Connection – a group dedicated to support Hispanic youth in their day-to-day challenges and increase their awareness of options, including pursuing their education.

The Governor’s Office of Customer Service also recognized GPC Public Safety’s “An Eye on Safety Team.” The team implemented a concentrated focus to improve and enhance public safety and emergency and disaster preparedness. Public Safety identified four major areas: staffing, mass notification, emergency preparedness and planning, and surveillance systems. The department then engineered improvements in each area to ensure the safety of those who study, work, visit, or live near the college.

An example of the department’s new safety initiative is the JagALERT initiated in 2008-2009. JagALERT is a multi-modal mass notification system that enables Public Safety to communicate with the college community within minutes in the event of an emergency via phone, SMS text messaging, and email. JagALERT was first utilized spring 2009 to inform the college community of an active tornado warning. Almost instantly, more than 25,000 students, faculty, and staff were notified with voice and text messages to all available numbers on record for them.

In 2006 Gov. Sonny Perdue created the Governor’s Office of Customer Service to improve the quality of essential services in Georgia. The Governor’s Customer Service Awards were created to honor state employees and institutions that have gone “above and beyond” their normal service responsibilities.
Following the state’s direction, Georgia Perimeter established its own customer service initiatives and amassed a handsome collection of customer service awards. In 2008, GPC President Dr. Anthony S. Tricoli was named the USG’s gold medal service leader and the college was awarded the Governor’s Commendation for Customer Service Excellence for streamlining its enrollment process.

In fall 2008, GPC participated in the Governor’s Office of Customer Service Workplace Satisfaction Index survey, making GPC the first USG entity to participate in the state-wide effort.
