For the first time ever, Georgia Perimeter College will offer an engineering class to Rockdale/Newton area high school and college students designed to give them a jump start towards earning a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Beginning this fall at Rockdale Career Academy, GPC will offer Engineering 1603, a course that is part of the college’s Regents Engineering Transfer Program. RETP allows qualified Georgia Perimeter students who successfully complete the GPC/RETP engineering curriculum, to seamlessly transfer to Georgia Tech and complete their baccalaureate in engineering.

RETP, in its sixth year, until recently has operated mainly out of GPC’s Clarkston Campus. The new course in Rockdale will be the first offering of this program in the Rockdale and Newton County area. The course is open to college students and high school students through GPC’s Dual Enrollment program.

“This is a great asset for high school students interested in Dual Enrollment and planning a career in engineering,” said Newton Campus Dual Enrollment Coordinator Jeff Meadors. “They can take a college level course that is part of the RETP qualifications with Georgia Tech, and they can take this course right now, while they are in high school.”

Meadors said he expects more RETP qualified courses to be offered in the Rockdale/Newton area as student demand increases. Engineering 1603 will be taught in room 1048 (AutoCAD) on Tuesday/Thursday, from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.

“I like this course because it demonstrates to Newton/Rockdale area college students, including Dual Enrollment, that we at GPC are serious about our mission of expanding access and enrollment capacity to students in these areas,” Meadors adds. “Rockdale Career Academy CEO Miki Edwards has worked graciously with me to make this happen, so I hope local students take advantage of this exciting course offering.
