Joan E. Purdon, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, has been named chair of Georgia Perimeter College’s Nursing Program. She replaces Diane White, RN, CCRN, PhD, who has been promoted to dean of the GPC Health Sciences Division.

Purdon has spent the last nine years as director of the health ministry program at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a 2,300- member parish in downtown Atlanta. In her job at St. Luke’s, she collaborated with the pastoral care team to meet the spiritual, psycho-social and referral needs of the church members, including programs for families coping with chronic illness, cancer and other life-changing events.

Prior to her position at St. Luke’s, Purdon served eight years as chair of the nursing program at Raymond Walters College at the University of Cincinnati. She was also a member of the nursing faculty there for 15 years, where she taught adult health and gerontology.

Purdon said she looks forward to being back in a nursing school environment. “I love associate degree nursing, and I like that many of GPC’s students are the first in their families to go to college,” she said.

An Ohio native, Purdon has a baccalaureate degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati. She received her master’s in nursing from the University of Kentucky.

Her family includes two grown sons who live in California and New York with their families; her husband, Steve, and two granddaughters.

GPC’s Nursing Program is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing and has full accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The college grants two-year associate degrees in nursing. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the NCLEX examination for Registered Nurses.
