For Immediate Release

Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus is joining forces with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to combat alcohol abuse, including underage drinking and impaired driving. The Office of Public safety was awarded a Young Adult Alcohol Awareness and Seat Belt Compliance grant for $7,500.

Georgia Perimeter will use the grant to launch GPC Newton Campus Cares. The program’s goal is to increase the use of seatbelts by drivers to and from the Newton Campus. Currently Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus Public Safety is the only Campus Police Department to be awarded an educational grant covering this topic.

The priority concern of the grant is the high percentage of alcohol related crashes, injuries and fatalities among college age students in the United States, specifically the state of Georgia. Many teenagers do not wear seat belts, and do not designate drivers who have not consumed alcoholic beverages or other drugs during social gatherings, said Lt. Andrew Moore, of GPC Newton Campus. Drivers are less likely to use restraints when they have been drinking, he said.

GPC Newton Campus is not serviced by public transportation, thus causing a high flow of traffic to and from the campus. The Office of Public Safety works closely with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the Walton/Newton County MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers).

GPC Public Safety will conduct Safety Checks in the drive to the campus throughout the year. Educational materials will be provided during these checkpoints and during events here on the campus.  Training will be provided for students who act as Peer Educators.
