Georgia Perimeter College student Kevin Sparrow won first place in the Restaurant and Food Service event at the annual Georgia Collegiate DECA competitions. Held February 12th in Atlanta, the competition included business simulations requiring students to apply what they learned in the classroom to solve problems involving real world situations.
The state conference hosted team and individual events as well as the election of new state officers. Three students from GPC participated in the competitions.
Collegiate DECA is a national organization for marketing and business students. The state conference is held annually for members from colleges throughout Georgia. At the conference, students compete in event categories ranging from Business Law to Marketing Management.
Karen Howard, Club Advisor and Marketing Instructor at DeKalb Tech, also serves as State Advisor for Collegiate DECA. “The students appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate their business and communication skills and the chance to interact with the business professionals who serve as judges for the competitive events. This year Georgia membership grew 22 percent statewide and we have added new college chapters,” said Howard.
Ninety-five students from 10 colleges participated in the competitions. As first place winner in his event category, Sparrow is eligible to participate in the upcoming International Career Development Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida, April 13 to 16.
