Georgia Perimeter College’s Gateway To College Academy will host a Second Chance Educational Fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 30 at the Clarkston Campus Student Center. This fair is for any high school students who have dropped out or are thinking about dropping out of high school and looking for a second chance to complete their high school diploma.
“We’re a good place to re-start,” said Gateway Director/Principal Robert Wigfall. “Our kids are at risk for a number of different reasons that are sometimes personal and not always centered on academics. They have either dropped out of high school or are headed down that road.
“We’re a good solid starting place,” Wigfall adds. “We help bring stability back into their lives and we provide a safe haven where they can focus on earning their high school diploma, if that’s what they want to do. We have the educators and the support team to help them reach their goal of completing high school.”
Wigfall said as a Georgia Perimeter program, Gateway also gives these students early exposure to college-level work.
“Two Gateway students are HOPE scholars,” Wigfall adds. “One is attending a four-year college (Georgia State) and the other is completing her associate degree at GPC.”
The Gateway program is housed on GPC’s Clarkston Campus. To enroll in Gateway a student must be between 16 and 20 years old and eligible to attend a DeKalb County school. Gateway is free for DeKalb County residents.
Wigfall said DeKalb Tech, Job Core and the Georgia Department of Labor will also be represented at the fair.
“Everyone will not be a good fit for Gateway,” Wigfall said. “Some may have aged-out for us but can still earn a GED and begin study at DeKalb Tech. Others may need employment while they continue their education. We’ll have representatives at the fair to help us provide the best opportunities for these young men and women.”
