John P. Stevens Sr. has joined the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Perimeter College Foundation. Stevens, named one of the most influential lobbyists in the state of Georgia, and his wife, Joyce, are the owners of The Stevens Group, a lobbying and consulting firm in operation since 1995.

Stevens began his career in 1950 with First National Bank of Atlanta. He was named senior vice president in 1975 and executive vice president in 1981. During his tenure, he created the Government Division within the bank and had the responsibility for all government banking for the United States  government, agencies of the state of Georgia, metropolitan Atlanta, local governments and other governmental and quasi-governmental entities. Stevens retired in 1994 as executive vice president of Wachovia Bank, which had merged with First National Bank of Atlanta.

Widely respected in the halls of the Georgia State Capitol, Stevens has been included among “Georgia Trend” magazine’s annual list of 100 Most Influential Georgians. He has been involved in virtually all major banking legislation in the state and US Congress since the mid 1950s.

Stevens is founding president of the Boys & Girls Club of Walton County; a member of Monroe Rotary Club; Walton County Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He served as chairman of the Governmental Council of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce for many years. He served as chairman of the Legislative Liaison Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association and as a director of Avondale Mills for 40 years.

A native of Americus, Stevens graduated from Emory University with a degree in finance. Also, he is a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University and Emory University’s Advanced Management School.

Stevens and his wife Joyce make their home in Good Hope.
