According to a report from the University System of Georgia, a record number of students are turning to Georgia Perimeter College for a relevant education in tough economic times. Approximately 27,000 students have chosen GPC for their education, a 7.5 percent increase over the same period in 2010.
Georgia Perimeter enrolls more freshmen, and more Dual Enrollment students than any other institution in the USG. GPC maintains the third largest enrollment in the University System.
“Our continued rise in enrollment in every category shows that in this economy more people are turning to GPC to fulfill their educational needs,” said College President Dr. Anthony Tricoli. “More students are making GPC their college of first choice, and more of our residents are choosing Georgia Perimeter as the institution to gain a relevant education during the recession. I am so pleased to know that we are meeting the needs of our community.”
Students are likely choosing GPC because of our low cost, high quality, accessibility and small class sizes, Tricoli said. “With changes to the HOPE Scholarship and an increase in tuition and costs, more people are seeing the value of an education they can receive at GPC,” he said. “And our outstanding faculty seal the deal.”
Meanwhile, enrollment in the University System of Georgia has set another record. According to the USG’s fall semester enrollment report, 318,027 students are attending college—an increase of 6,585 students, or 2.1 percent, from fall 2010 to fall 2011.
While the growth over the past year is smaller than in some recent years, we continue to see more individuals seeking access to public higher education,” said Chancellor Hank Huckaby. “And we are seeing more minority students looking to the University System for educational opportunity, which reflects the increase in Georgia’s minority populations.”
But the numbers are only part of the story, Huckaby said. “The real challenge we face is to equip these students with the skills and critical values they need to succeed in a very competitive world. And with more of the jobs of the future requiring some form of postsecondary education, we have work to do to increase Georgia’s college-going rate and our college completion rates.”
“As a member of the 35 institution USG team, Georgia Perimeter College’s mission has historically focused on access into the system as well as transfer ease into four-year colleges and universities,” Tricoli said. “Our anticipated enrollment in the fall of 2007 was 13,400 students; today we enroll just shy of 27,000 students, and in that same time period we’ve transferred thousands of students into senior institutions. We look forward to continuing our excellent tradition in whatever way the USG needs us to serve Georgians.”
