Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named Georgia Perimeter College to the coveted Military Friendly Schools ® list. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools ® list honors the country’s top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

Boasting the largest military populations in the University System of Georgia, GPC serves more than 800 current military, veterans and their family members. The college’s Military Outreach Initiative is a comprehensive plan to centralize services for this population.

“It is an honor to have our efforts recognized nationally. Our goal with the Military Outreach Initiative is to be military friendly, to offer the highest quality education at an affordable price to service members, veterans and their dependents,” said Mark Eister, director of Military Outreach at GPC. “We want service members to know that they have a home at GPC; we will do our best to make the transition to college as smooth as possible.”

Georgia Perimeter’s main Military Outreach Center at Clarkston Campus offers centralized services for veterans and their families. This includes financial aid, advising and counseling, and Veterans Affairs benefits. The center houses a Military Student Advocate who offers academic advising. In addition, there is a military recruiter.

“While this is the main outreach center, we have resource centers at each campus,” Eister said. “We want to serve all of our vets and their families at every GPC location. Each hub is a one-stop-shop center for them.”

Also, GPC is collaborating with the Shepherd Center in Atlanta to help military clients who have traumatic brain injuries reach their educational goals. “We are working with disability services and the Office of Advising and Counseling to help ease their transition to the college,” Eister said.

Eister’s staff also supports and advises several student military outreach clubs and organizations.

“Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools ® shows Georgia Perimeter College’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, director for G.I. Jobs magazine and vice president at Victory Media.  “As interest in education grows we’re thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools.”
