Decatur Symposium Traces Family Roots

Understanding your family’s roots and why you are who you are is the basis for “Family: Humanity’s First Institution,” spring symposium held on the Georgia Perimeter College Decatur Campus March 18 to 21.

The symposium will cover topics from genealogy to genetics, and will include presentations, workshops and exhibits by faculty, staff, and students, exploring the multi-dimensional facets of the family institution. Included among the activities is a beginner’s workshop on researching family history.

Kicking off the symposium is the session, “Connecting Family History with the World and U.S. History,” moderated by Craig McPherson, GPC History instructor at 11:30 a.m. in Room SB 1190; followed by “Uncovering Your Family Roots: A Beginner’s Workshop,” at 2:30 p.m. in SB 2160.

Two more workshops on uncovering family roots will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, March 21. The workshops, conducted by Shawn Williams, GPC Humanities professor, will be in SA 3110.

On Tuesday, March 19, “Critical Issues in Family Psychology,” will be at 11: 30 conducted by Newborn Reynolds, GPC psychology professor in Room SC 1190; and “DNA Analyses: The Science of Family Relations,” by Virginia Cannon, biology professor. at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 20, panelists reveal the results of their genealogical research in “My Family Story,” at 1 p.m. in room SB 2210. The session will be moderated by Brenda Sudan, GPC reading professor. At 3:30 p.m., a “Managing Family and Academic Success,” workshop will be facilitated by Ca Trice Glenn and Frederick Holloman in Room SC 2140 at 3:30 p.m.

On Thursday, March 21 at 1 p.m. “The Depiction of African-American Family in Popular Culture,” discussion will be conducted by Shawn Williams. At 6 p.m., “What Makes a Family?” will wrap up the symposium with a student panel discussing the changing definition of family. Both sessions will be in Room SB 1190.
