Bruce Bochicchio, a Georgia Perimeter College business administration major, has been chosen to receive the first place, $10,000 national Executive Women International ASIST scholarship.

Bochicchio, who attends GPC’s Alpharetta Center, is a retired police officer, who has worked through a series of setbacks in his professional and personal life. He is a divorced father of six, two of whom are the adopted children of Bochicchio’s late brother.

Bochicchio was surprised by the award, which he received during a dinner given by the Atlanta EWI chapter, said Erica Hart, GPC’s development officer of scholarships and giving, and an EWI chapter member. Bochicchio had previously received a $2,000 Atlanta EWI chapter award, making him eligible for the national scholarship.

With four children in college, but no degree himself, Bochicchio enrolled in GPC in 2010 to pursue an associate degree. The 47-year-old, who is on track to graduate in May, also is president of the GPC Alpharetta Student Government Association. He plans to transfer to Georgia State University in the fall to earn his bachelor’s degree in business and economics.

“We are all thrilled for Bruce, who is very deserving of this scholarship on so many levels,” said Janet Spix, EWI Atlanta director-at-large. “He is hard working and found himself in circumstances that might have overwhelmed many people, but instead he kept his head up and continued to move forward. We know the benefits he is receiving now he will pass to his children and to his brother’s children. So, while he is the recipient, many will benefit in a positive way from this gift from EWI corporate.”

The EWI scholarship—Adult Students in Scholastic Transition—supports non-traditional students who are pursuing higher education.
Bochicchio will be honored this fall in San Diego during the organization’s national meeting.
