How does College Algebra online work?
You will be able to complete homework, quizzes, and some other assessments from your home PC, or any computer with internet access and the downloadable software. You are required to take the final exam at a GPC Testing Center (or at a Testing Center of an accredited college near you). Details are provided in the course syllabus. For the Spring semester, you will have two or three sections of the textbook to complete each week. There will be five or so quizzes, four or five tests, two required discussion posts each week and a proctored final exam.
How is the course set up?
My course will have 2 components: A iCollege component and a MyMathLab component.
iCollege includes email, discussion boards, live classrooms and chat rooms. I also have supplementary materials (e.g., videos and notes for each section of the course, test reviews, quiz & test solutions) in iCollege. Quizzes and some tests will be taken in WebCT.
The MyMathLab component is a software package provided by the publisher of the textbook that will be used in my course. MyMathLab is where the graded homework will be completed. MyMathLab also includes many resources: videos made by the publisher, interactive homework tutorials, an electronic version of the textbook, and free tutoring via email, telephone, or online chat.
What materials are required? See Online Math for ISBN's.
(1) MyMathLab Access code. The MyMathLab course ID is available in iCollege.
(2) TI-84 or TI-83 Graphing Calculator. The methods to use the graphing calculator will be shown throughout this course. It is expected that you know how to use the calculator upon completing this course. You are required to have access to a TI-84 or a TI-83. A TI-89 or TI-92 calculator is not permitted for this course. Quizzes and tests will be designed so that the graphing calculator is required on some problems.
(3) Textbook: A Graphical Approach to College Algebra (4th edition) by Hornsby, Lial, & Rockswold (2007).
You may opt to use the electronic version of the textbook available in MyMathLab rather than purchasing the hardcopy of the textbook. If you purchase a new textbook at a GPC bookstore, it should be bundled with the MyMathLab access kit at no additional charge.
