Each year millions of people are diagnosised with gastrointestional problems and disorders. These range in complexity and severity with each individual, but all require the treatment and expertise of trained and experienced gastroenterologists. The UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology meets these needs by providing competent and profession care to individuals suffering from all gastrointestinal and liver related diseases.
The UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinical Services
We operate inpatient and consultative services at University Hospital and Birmingham VA Medical Center. Outpatient clinics are held at both The Kirklin Clinic and Birmingham VA Medical Center.
The Kirklin Clinic
At University Hospital, the inpatient service maintains a daily census of approximately 24 patients in the GI/Hepatology unit located in Jefferson Tower. Approximately 80 patients are evaluated monthly on the consultation service. Each service is staffed by an attending faculty member and fellow that rotate monthly. Residents rotate through both ward and consultation services.
Annual outpatient visits to The Kirklin Clinic average over 10,000 with over 5,000 procedures performed each year. Patients are seen by attending faculty with the assistance of fellows.
At UAB, we are able to use the most current diagnostic and treatment procedures when treating gastroenterological and liver related ailments. We also utilize the services of the expert physicians in the UAB Liver Center, the Pancreatiobiliary Center, and the EUS program to accurately diagnose and treat these disorders.
