The USF Honors College is located in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country, one that provides numerous intellectual, cultural, recreational, and social resources. The Honors College provides an exciting experience and a productive learning environment that combines the advantages of a small, highly personalized college with the resources of a large research institution. Outside the classroom, our vibrant Tampa Bay community offers an array of internship and volunteer opportunities.
The Honors College at the University of South Florida is for motivated students, regardless of major. The Honors College program emphasizes the development of thinking, reasoning, analytic and writing skills, which you can apply to an individual research project or original creative work. The Honors College curriculum replaces a significant portion of the University's Foundations of Knowledge requirements, so participating in Honors will not generally increase your workload.
Benefits of participating in the Honors College include:
- Small classes that encourage interaction among students and USF's top faculty
- Personal advising by faculty and staff who are committed to your success
- On-campus opportunities to work with faculty who are doing cutting-edge research
- The chance to broaden your horizons through international study or participating in honors conferences across the country.
- Effective for all Honors College students with at least a 3.0 overall and USF GPA, registration on the first day each semester.
Honors College students receive an Honors distinction on transcripts and diplomas as well as special recognition at graduation. Your Honors experience will be an invaluable advantage as you pursue postgraduate work and face career choices and challenges. Graduate and professional schools and employers recognize students who have gone the extra mile.
One of our recent Honors College graduates, a Business Management major, expressed our goals very well when he said: "The combination of class lecture, participation, and research provided a potent mix for an ideal learning environment and academic rigor that stimulates and fosters intellect, creativity, and innovation."
Alexandra, one of our recent graduates, wrote: 'My fondest memory of the Honors College is not one moment, but a culmination of moments, that created the support I have felt throughout my time at the Honors College. It is a feeling that is testament to the dedication of the Honors College to its students, and that allows me to move forward confident that the support I have found here will continue with me' ... 'There was always someone at the Honors College who was ready to be the sounding board and confidant, the mentor and colleague, which every student needs. Most importantly, they were the supportive hand that said, 'I believe in you, you can do it!' when traditional voices of encouragement fell silent. This emotion of genuine and sincere gratitude for support when I needed it the most is my fondest memory of my Honors experience.'

Brand New Honors Global Citizenship Program
Beginning this fall, The Honors College will be participating in USF’s new Global Citizenship Program General Education (GCP). This is an innovative program designed for new first year (freshman) students who have an interest in global issues and who may consider careers related to international health issues, economic development, environmental and cultural sustainability, international law and human rights. Pre med, pre law, political science, business, public health, arts and humanities, international studies majors and others may be excited about having expertise in global issues.
Here’s the ‘scoop’:
You’ll take one globally oriented Honors College course per semester for your first two USF years and receive your regular Honors scholarship for each of those courses.
You’ll study abroad in the summer following your second year and we’ll give you $2000 for that purpose!! Then, you’ll take one globally oriented Honors course in the fall of your third year to tie it all together.
Upon graduation, your transcript will reflect that you received a Certificate in Global Citizenship. Graduate and professional schools will be impressed as will prospective employers.
Participation in GCP should not affect course load or time to graduation. The Honors courses you’ll take in the GC program will meet University General Education requirements; one or two may serve as electives towards graduation.
Please think about this program; it will be fun, interesting and could well provide you with a “competitive edge”. Let me know if you think this might be for you. you are not making a commitment but we can talk further if you wish.
