USF Honors College: College of Medicine Basic Science Program

College of Medicine Basic Science Program

The USF department of biochemistry is extremely interested in the early identification of potential graduate students. The department has a special program that directly benefits Honors students by encouraging early entrance into graduate coursework for qualified students.

Honors students who are interested in pursuing graduate programs in the sciences or careers in medicine may have the opportunity to begin graduate study within the biochemistry department during the third year of study at USF.

Following the second year of undergraduate study, interested science majors meet with the Honors dean and a biochemistry dept. representative. We select students for the program based on completed science coursework, GPA and interview.

Beginning in the fall of the junior year, students accepted into the program work in a faculty laboratory, allowing them to assist in ongoing research throughout their undergraduate program. In the second semester of the junior year, students continue laboratory employment and enroll in one graduate course selected by the biochemistry advisor (with Honors approval).

Fourth year students continue laboratory employment and complete the Honors College thesis requirement. Students enroll in appropriate graduate classes as determined by the biochemistry advisor (with Honors College approval).

The biochemistry department will provide the student with a scholarship that covers the difference between graduate and undergraduate tuition for each graduate course in which the student is registered. Successfully completing graduate courses will assist in fulfilling requirements for a Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary natural sciences.

Brand New Honors Global Citizenship Program

Beginning this fall, The Honors College will be participating in USF’s new Global Citizenship Program General Education (GCP). This is an innovative program designed for new first year (freshman) students who have an interest in global issues and who may consider careers related to international health issues, economic development, environmental and cultural sustainability, international law and human rights. Pre med, pre law, political science, business, public health, arts and humanities, international studies majors and others may be excited about having expertise in global issues.
Here’s the ‘scoop’:
You’ll take one globally oriented Honors College course per semester for your first two USF years and receive your regular Honors scholarship for each of those courses.
You’ll study abroad in the summer following your second year and we’ll give you $2000 for that purpose!! Then, you’ll take one globally oriented Honors course in the fall of your third year to tie it all together.
Upon graduation, your transcript will reflect that you received a Certificate in Global Citizenship. Graduate and professional schools will be impressed as will prospective employers.
Participation in GCP should not affect course load or time to graduation. The Honors courses you’ll take in the GC program will meet University General Education requirements; one or two may serve as electives towards graduation.
Please think about this program; it will be fun, interesting and could well provide you with a “competitive edge”. Let me know if you think this might be for you. you are not making a commitment but we can talk further if you wish.
