USF Honors College: 7 Yr. Medical Program

Eligible USF first-time in college students who have been admitted to the Honors College and are interested in attending medical school have an opportunity to receive admission to USF's College of Medicine (COM) and complete a medical degree in seven years, provided that the student continues to meet all the requirements of the program. The first three years of study will be completed at the Honors College at USF and the fourth year will be completed at USF College of Medicine as part of the first year of medical school. A Bachelor's Degree will be conferred following successful completion of undergraduate requirements (typically after the fourth year of study). The Doctor of Medicine Degree will be conferred after the successful completion of the program. Students applying for this accelerated program major in Biomedical Sciences (BMS) in order to receive a Baccalaureate Degree.

The Honors College will provide oversight of the student's progress in meeting Honors requirements and will coordinate overall completion of the first three years of the program. Students will receive advisement and schedule planning assistance each semester from a department advisor and the pre-health professional advisor. USF College of Medicine will provide oversight of the 4-year medical school curricular component of the program.

Initial Eligibility Requirements

  • Admission to the Honors College as a first year student. Transfer and continuing students are not eligible to enter the 7 Year BS/MD program.
  • Beginning 2012, an SAT of 1350 or an ACT of 30 will be required for students who wish to enter the 7 Year BS/MD program.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is a requirement.

Application Process

  • Any eligible student may follow the track during their first year of undergraduate enrollment. By a specified date at the end of the first year, students must submit a declaration of intent to formally join the BS/MD program.
  • Students who meet all specified benchmarks will officially apply to the USF College of Medicine during the summer between their second and third undergraduate year.
  • Applicants will follow the Early Decision application process and timeline.  A completed AMCAS (primary medical school application) and an MCAT score of 30 will be due to USF College of Medicine no later than the AMCAS primary application deadline for a given application year (currently August 1, but subject to change).
    • Note: AMCAS applications can be submitted beginning June 1 of each year.  AMCAS reviewers need up to six weeks to verify submitted applications prior to forwarding them to medical schools; therefore we strongly encourage students to submit their AMCAS between June 1 – June 15.
  • Applicants will complete a secondary application and submit letters of recommendation to USF College of Medicine no later than the secondary application deadline (currently August 15, but subject to change).
  • Applicants who have met all GPA, MCAT and extra-curricular benchmarks, and who have submitted complete application materials by the deadlines will receive an invitation for a formal interview by the USF College of Medicine.  Successful completion of the interview is a requirement for acceptance by the USF College of Medicine.

USF Program Requirements (first three years)

Academic Benchmarks

  • At the end of the spring semester of the first year, students must attain both an overall and science/math grade point average (GPA) of 3.60, without the use of grade forgiveness. NOTE: If students transfer in a GPA from dual enrollment or transient coursework completed at another institution, the overall and science/math GPAs from all coursework completed at USF must also be 3.60 or higher.
  • At the end of the summer semester of the second year, students must attain both an overall and science/math grade point average (GPA) of 3.70 in all college coursework and in all USF coursework, without the use of grade forgiveness.
  • At the end of the summer semester of the third year, students must attain both an overall and science/math grade point average (GPA) of 3.70 in all college coursework and in all USF coursework, without the use of grade forgiveness.

Note: GPAs are not rounded.

Medical Experience
Students must attain a minimum of 60 contact hours of approved medical experience by the end of their second year. Documentation is required. Examples of acceptable experience include physician shadowing, or service in an emergency room, physician's office, or clinic working directly with a physician. Students must obtain prior written approval by their Honors College BS/MD advisor to ensure that their medical experience is suitable to count towards their program requirement.

Community Service Volunteering/Volunteering
A career in medicine is a career in service; therefore, service is an important component of a pre-medical student's preparation for a medical career. BS/MD program students must complete a minimum of 60 documented contact hours of volunteering by the time they submit their AMCAS application to USF COM between their second and third year. Volunteering can be completed on or off-campus but must be affiliated with a recognized non-profit organization which provides donated services for public benefit. Examples of appropriate volunteering activities include Habitat for Humanity, Reach Out and Read, Relay for Life, United Way, Metropolitan Ministries, and service projects organized through USF's Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement. Students can volunteer in a hospital or clinic in order to obtain patient-care experience but community service of a non-medical nature is also strongly encouraged.

Students can document their community service using the form available under the Resources & Forms tab. The volunteer coordinator verifying the hours should be the on-site coordinator or supervisor; if not, a faculty advisor from a campus service organization (if applicable) can verify the hours. The final documentation of 60 hours is due to the BS/MD program advisors no later than August 15 prior to the start of the third year. Note that the hours should be completed earlier than this, as they should be listed on the student's submitted AMCAS which is typically due prior to August 15.

If your volunteer site maintains a log of your service hours, then a copy of that log printed on the organization's letterhead and signed by the volunteer supervisor is acceptable documentation.

Note: Volunteer activities that are religious or political nature are not accepted towards this requirement. Research done on a paid or unpaid basis is not accepted for this requirement (although it may count towards the BS/MD research requirement). If you are unsure whether or not your intended volunteer experience is appropriate to meet the community service requirement for the BS/MD program, please check with one of the BS/MD program advisors.

NOTE: At least 20 of the medical experience or community service volunteering hours must be completed and documentation submitted to the BS/MD advisor following the completion of the spring semester of the first year.

Biomedical Research
Students are required to complete a minimum of two semesters of biomedical research. The research project may be lab based or clinical as long as it has medical relevance. Prior to starting the research project students must obtain approval from the BS/MD program advisor. Students will email a description of their project to their BS/MD advisor for review by the College of Medicine. Students often opt to combine their biomedical research with their Honors Thesis (IDH 5975). Students interested in doing this should begin their research a semester prior to the two semester thesis.

Honors College Curriculum
Prior to matriculation to the College of Medicine in the 4th year, students must complete the Honors College curriculum including a two semester thesis (IDH 5975), a special section of IDH 3600 in Biomedical Ethics and two semesters of Foreign Language. The curriculum also requires IDH 3100 Arts & Humanities (Fall 2010 cohort & later) or IDH 2010 Acquisition of Knowledge (Fall 2009 &earlier cohort). Students must also complete any courses needed to fulfill the FKL (Foundations of Knowledge & Learning). To view which honors curriculum courses fulfill FKL requirements please see this page: http://honors.usf.edu/ed_req.html

Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)

  • MCAT must be taken during the spring or early summer of second year, with a minimum score of 30, with no individual section score less than 8. The score must be available to the College of Medicine by August 1st of the application year. Keep in mind it takes approximately 30 days for MCAT scores to be reported. It is recommended that students be prepared to take the MCAT no later than April/May. Students could then retake the test in June if necessary.

AMCAS

  • Students who meet all specified benchmarks will officially apply to the 7-year program during the summer between the second and third year on campus; at this time a formal application (AMCAS) to medical school will be completed.
  • See individual cohort tab for details on the application process.

College of Medicine Interview

  • Students must pass a formal interview with the USF College of Medicine.   Interviews are typically conducted in September of the third year.  During the preceding spring and summer, the Honors College and the College of Medicine will jointly provide information and workshops that will assist students in preparing for the interview.

Letters of Recommendation

  • Students must submit letters of recommendation (see individual cohort tab for more details on what types of letters to request)

Attention: Students who wish to pursue the BS/MD program who enter during or after the Fall 2011 semester must declare their interest in this program using the following form.

BS/MD Interest Declaration Form

Our 7-year program is designed for students who are passionate about pursuing medicine as a career and wish to accelerate their education. Students should expect the first two years of the program to be intensive as the courses necessary to take the MCAT exam and study for the MCAT are completed. While students in this program do not take heavier course loads than other students, they do take the MCAT exam a full year earlier than others and may have less time to study for the exam. Students must be prepared to earn high grades, do research, shadow physicians and engage in service.

Program Requirements & Timeline for students who entered Fall 2011

Initial Eligibility Requirements

  • Admission to the Honors College as a first year student. Transfer and continuing students are not eligible to enter the 7 Year BS/MD program.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is a requirement.

USF Program Requirements

The following list of courses and benchmarks must be completed for admission to the USF College of Medicine. Please note: students who meet these benchmarks are not guaranteed acceptance into the 7-year program. The decision will be made by the College of Medicine following the formal interview.

Students who enter USF with AP scores of 5 or IB scores of 7 in any of the math or science requirements are eligible to waive the corresponding courses; however, in certain circumstances students may consider retaking selected requirements. In the event that students decide to apply competitively for medical school, some programs across the country restrict the use of AP, IB or Dual Enrollment credit to satisfy admission requirements.

Dual Enrollment credits in Calculus and Statistics are acceptable for the BS/MD program provided that the student earned a grade of 'A'. Students may also apply Dual Enrollment credit toward up to one year of Chemistry, Biology or Physics (including the labs) provided the student earned grades of 'A' in the lectures and labs. Please see your 7-Year Advisor to discuss the best way to apply your accelerated credit towards your BS/MD program requirements.

Brand New Honors Global Citizenship Program

Beginning this fall, The Honors College will be participating in USF’s new Global Citizenship Program General Education (GCP). This is an innovative program designed for new first year (freshman) students who have an interest in global issues and who may consider careers related to international health issues, economic development, environmental and cultural sustainability, international law and human rights. Pre med, pre law, political science, business, public health, arts and humanities, international studies majors and others may be excited about having expertise in global issues.
Here’s the ‘scoop’:
You’ll take one globally oriented Honors College course per semester for your first two USF years and receive your regular Honors scholarship for each of those courses.
You’ll study abroad in the summer following your second year and we’ll give you $2000 for that purpose!! Then, you’ll take one globally oriented Honors course in the fall of your third year to tie it all together.
Upon graduation, your transcript will reflect that you received a Certificate in Global Citizenship. Graduate and professional schools will be impressed as will prospective employers.
Participation in GCP should not affect course load or time to graduation. The Honors courses you’ll take in the GC program will meet University General Education requirements; one or two may serve as electives towards graduation.
Please think about this program; it will be fun, interesting and could well provide you with a “competitive edge”. Let me know if you think this might be for you. you are not making a commitment but we can talk further if you wish.
