USF Honors College: Community

HOUSING

Honors College students have the option of living in the Honors Living Learning Community (LLC) which is located in Juniper Poplar Hall. Living in the LLC will give you the opportunity to socialize and study with your academic peers, enriching the college experience. Contact Lisa Booth, the Graduate Assistant for the LLC at lmboothhonors.usf.edu for more information.

Honors students are not required to live in the LLC. Aside from the LLC, the Honors College also has Magnolia B apartments reserved for Honors College students. There are also many other options available through Housing that can be found at http://www.housing.usf.edu.

HONORS LOUNGE

The lounge is located on the second floor of the Allen building (ALN), just down the hall from the Honors Office. The lounge is accessible by combination lock, and Honors students will receive the code at orientation. The Lounge is your social hub – a place to study, meet, eat and chat. It is decorated with pictures from events and student projects, and has bulletin boards on which you can leave messages for your classmates.

COMPUTER LAB

The Honors computer lab is now part of the Lounge. It currently contains several Dell computers, a Mac, and a laser printer. Students can use the lab during regular office hours and need only supply paper for printing.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Honors College Student Council web site.

The Honors Student Council is our student led organization that sponsors a number of academic, social, and service activities tailored to the Honors student throughout the semester. The office is now located in ADM 241.

Vision: Create an active and consistent community within the Honors College capable of promoting ongoing honors programs.

Questions or comments regarding the HCSC should be directed to Huda Oweis, the Graduate Assistant for the council, at howeishonors.usf.edu.

Honors Philharmonic Orchestra

The Honors Philharmonic Orchestra made its debut in fall 1997, playing Phantom of the Opera, The Entertainer, and even an original piece that was composed by a student. The unique feature of the Honors Philharmonic is that the participants are not music majors - they are students who enjoy playing. So dust off that instrument and join us!

Anyone who's interested in participating is welcome. The Honors Philharmonic currently practices every Monday from 6:15 pm to 7:30 pm (during fall and spring semesters). The group performs at a variety of campus events each year, and students can earn arts and humanities credit for participation.

Learn more by contacting Dr. Silverman at silvermanhonors.usf.edu if you are interested in joining.

Brand New Honors Global Citizenship Program

Beginning this fall, The Honors College will be participating in USF’s new Global Citizenship Program General Education (GCP). This is an innovative program designed for new first year (freshman) students who have an interest in global issues and who may consider careers related to international health issues, economic development, environmental and cultural sustainability, international law and human rights. Pre med, pre law, political science, business, public health, arts and humanities, international studies majors and others may be excited about having expertise in global issues.
Here’s the ‘scoop’:
You’ll take one globally oriented Honors College course per semester for your first two USF years and receive your regular Honors scholarship for each of those courses.
You’ll study abroad in the summer following your second year and we’ll give you $2000 for that purpose!! Then, you’ll take one globally oriented Honors course in the fall of your third year to tie it all together.
Upon graduation, your transcript will reflect that you received a Certificate in Global Citizenship. Graduate and professional schools will be impressed as will prospective employers.
Participation in GCP should not affect course load or time to graduation. The Honors courses you’ll take in the GC program will meet University General Education requirements; one or two may serve as electives towards graduation.
Please think about this program; it will be fun, interesting and could well provide you with a “competitive edge”. Let me know if you think this might be for you. you are not making a commitment but we can talk further if you wish.
