10/10/ 2007 Clark Awards recognize service to University and community

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2007) – A volunteer who has devoted more than 50 years to serving the needs of children with physical and neurological disorders, is one of five outstanding community and University of Windsor supporters who will be honoured with the 2007 Clark Award. This year’s winners will receive their awards during a dinner in their honour, Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Ambassador Auditorium, on the second floor of the University of Windsor’s CAW Student Centre.

Clark Awards have been presented annually since 1994 and are named in honour of the late Charles J. Clark Sr., Q.C., former Chancellor of the University of Windsor. The award recognizes outstanding personal service of both alumni volunteers and friends of the University who have made significant commitments in time, energy and expertise by serving on University boards, committees or campaigns, or have worked extensively to increase the profile and reputation of the University.

The recipients for 2007 are:

Carol Derbyshire, Former Chair, University of Windsor Board of Governors, and Executive Chair, The Hospice of Windsor, Inc., is being honoured for her dedication to the University of Windsor and her wide involvement in the Windsor community. Among other appointments: She serves on the boards of Hotel Dieu/Grace Hospital, the Hospice Association of Ontario and Lakeview Montessori School. She is involved with the City of Windsor’s Economic Viability Committee, and serves as Chair of the New Canadian Centre of Excellence, and the Malden Park Executive and Family Council Committee. She has served as advisor to the AIDS Committee of Windsor, and on the boards and committees of United Way Windsor Essex County, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Victim Services, Cancer Care Ontario South Region, and the District Health Council.

E. Peter Farmer (LLB ’74 UWindsor), Chief Executive Officer, Denison Mines, is a strong supporter of the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law. He was the first Chair of the school’s JD/LLB Advisory Board and continues to serve as a board member. He was co-chair of the faculty’s highly successful $2000-4-$2000 fundraising campaign, which raised more than $5 million for Windsor Law programs, scholarships, research, and physical and technological improvements. He is also co-founder of the Berrill and Farmer Bursary, presented annually to a first-year law student who has a strong commitment to community service in either the LLB or JD/LLB program.

John McGivney (LLD ‘85 UWindsor), Former Chair, University of Windsor Board of Governors, is being honoured for more than half a century of volunteering in the Windsor area and for his dedication to the University of Windsor. As president of the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918), McGivney spearheaded the needs assessment and fundraising efforts for the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre of Essex County, later renamed the John McGivney Children’s Centre. He was instrumental in helping the centre expand its services to meet the growing needs of vulnerable children in our community, and was bestowed with a life membership from Rotary (1918) for being a positive role model of the club’s Service Above Self theme. He was also honoured with Rotary’s Eli Goldin Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding community service. Among other accomplishments, he served on the University of Windsor’s Board of Governors from 1975 to 1984, as President of the Windsor Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Windsor Police Commission, and received the United Way Centraide-Windsor/Essex County Volunteer Spirit City Award for dedication and longstanding commitment to volunteerism in the Windsor-Essex County area.

Rev. Ulysse (Bud) Pare, C.S.B, Former Chair, University of Windsor Board of Governors, is being honoured for his commitment to the University of Windsor, Assumption University and the Windsor community. Father Pare came to Windsor in 1991 as president of Assumption University following a career dedicated to religious study and education. While at Assumption University he founded the Institute for Pastoral and Education Ministry and was Director of the Christian Culture Series. He served as a Windsor representative on the Catholic Cemeteries’ Board, and as President and member of the Board of Governors for the Catholic Biblical Association of Canada. Father Pare has served as a member of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Directors and as both President and member of the University of Windsor’s Board of Governors. He is semi-retired, teaching occasionally, as well as offering parish assistance, and serving parish missions, retreats, and various other academic and pastoral activities.

Jean Wright (BA ‘71, BEd ‘72), is being honoured for her efforts as an outstanding University of Windsor supporter and alumni volunteer. She was a teacher for 33 years with the Essex County Roman Catholic District School Board (later the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board) and retired in 2005. Wright has served two terms on the Faculty of Education’s alumni reunion committee and is currently working to establish a Faculty of Education alumni group. She has been an active volunteer with the University of Windsor’s alumni board and has continued her commitment to the University by donating her time to convocation ceremonies and participating in various UWindsor events. She and her husband Bill Wright have three daughters, each of whom is a graduate of the University of Windsor.

William (Bill) Wright (BA ’70, LLB ’73), is being honoured for his commitment to the University of Windsor and volunteer efforts in the community. Wright is a civil litigation lawyer who has been practicing law in Windsor for 32 years. He is currently Counsel to the Clarks Law Firm. He played hockey for the University of Windsor Lancers Men’s intercollegiate hockey team as an undergraduate student and continues his involvement with the University through his work with the Alumni Association where he served as President. He has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Red Cross, the LaSalle Youth Centre, and as President of the Board of the Canadian Automobile Association. He recently accepted an appointment to the board of directors of the Windsor-Essex County Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife Jean Wright have three daughters, each of whom is a graduate of the University of Windsor.
