Narrative:
Troy University is in compliance with this requirement, awarding academic credit for course work taken on a noncredit basis only when there is documentation that the noncredit course work is equivalent to a designated credit experience.
Policies at the Undergraduate Level
Troy University recognizes that learning equivalent to the college level can occur outside the formal structure of accredited colleges and universities. Policies and procedures that require documentation through the student’s presentation of a portfolio for evaluation have been established for the assessment of this learning based on the “Principles of Good Practice in Assessing Experiential Learning” recommended by the Council for the Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) at the undergraduate level. As stated on page 49 of the 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog,
Students are required to enroll in CDC 3301 Portfolio Development for two semester hours of credit to ensure the appropriate documentation will be provided for the evaluation of the experiential learning experience under consideration.
As the policy indicates, credit as recommended by the American Council on Education may be granted for experiential learning acquired through military, industrial, or regionally accredited technical school training programs if the learning is applicable to the student’s degree program and if the student provides clear documentation of the equivalency of course work to the designated credit experience.
Experiential credit is considered non-traditional credit and will be posted only after the student has satisfactorily completed 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit with Troy University and has attained unconditional admission status ( p. 16, the 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog).
Policies at the Graduate Level
The only allowance for noncredit basis experiential learning in the Graduate School pertains to the acceptance of Professional Military Education courses, as detailed in the Graduate Catalog, page. 12.
As the links show, these policies are published annually in the Undergraduate Catalog and the Graduate Catalog, which are both available online.
All transfer credit is reviewed by full-time faculty members within each discipline. The recommended transfer credit is then forwarded to the dean of the college and dean of the Graduate School for final approval. The PME matrix is reviewed by faculty within each discipline for course equivalency and program appropriateness.
Enforcement of these policies is at the point of transcription of credit by the Registrar. Troy University is in compliance with this requirement.
