pass/fail courses for engineering students

Students in the College of Engineering may take courses on a pass/fail basis according to the following specifications:

• A student may take no more than two pass/fail courses during his or her degree program. Only one pass/fail course may be taken in any semester.
• Only general electives may be taken on a pass/fail basis.  Required engineering, mathematics, basic science and English courses, as well as NU Core electives, may NOT be taken as pass/fail courses.
• The decision as to whether or not a course will be graded on a pass/fail basis is left to the discretion of the instructor of the course. The student must request the instructor’s permission to receive a pass/fail grade.
• This request should be made and confirmed prior to the second week of the semester in which the course is being taken. A student CANNOT request a change of grade from a letter grade to a pass/fail grade, nor can a request be made to change pass/fail status once letter grades have been given for any quiz, test, exam, or homework assignment in the class.
• Students must meet all prerequisite requirements for the course.
• Pass/Fail grades are not calculated into the student’s QPA.
• Students on academic probation may NOT take courses on a pass/fail basis.
• A student who chooses to receive a Pass/Fail grade in a course cannot be on the Dean’s List for that semester.

All students should meet with their academic advisor before deciding to take a course pass/fail.
