Welcome to the College of Engineering computer network!
Having an account on the COE system is a privilege, not a right. Please read the Engineering Computer Center acceptable use policy. By using the system, you agree to abide by this policy.
Computer Center Labs: To meet the academic needs of our students and faculty, the Computer Center is now supporting a number of Windows XP labs. The Engineering Windows environment, COEWIN, is available in the following labs: 208, 274, 268 and 254 SN and 429 DA. COE Unix workstations running Sun Solaris 10 are available in 274 SN.
COE Windows: To use a COEWIN machine, log on with your COE username and password. (COE usernames do not have a dot in them.)
Logins protect the security of our system and enable you to have access to Engineering resources such as networked storage space, backups, and course directories. On COEWIN, your personal data is stored in your home directory on the COE system. You can save a file in your "My Documents" directory, and it will be there the next time you log on. Your data is safely backed up on tape to protect it against accidental corruption or deletion. Your Unix home directory appears as the "Z:" drive on a COEWIN computer.
Software stability is very important for our students and faculty. On COEWIN machines, you should find the software you need for Engineering and general use. The stability of these applications has been improved by not installing every application needed by every other college in the university.
If you need help with COEWIN, or if you need a software package that is not presently installed, please send a message to help@coe.neu.edu.
EMail: You can read and send email from your COE account using our WebMail. Go to http://www.coe.neu.edu and follow the link for WebMail.
You can also use Netscape Mail, Microsoft Outlook Express, or other popular mail client programs. Set your POP3 server to pop.coe.neu.edu, or set your IMAP server to imap.coe.neu.edu (we support SSL for IMAP). You can use our SMTP server (smtp.coe.neu.edu) to send mail from email clients that support SSL and authentication.
For more information about setting up email software, see HELP!.
Remote logins: To log in to a Solaris workstation, ssh to gateway.coe.neu.edu. Linux logins are available on lingate.coe.neu.edu by ssh from gateway.coe.neu.edu or any other COE machine. Many of our users use pine to read and send email from a remote login session.
Ftp: For file transfer using ftp, please connect to ftp.coe.neu.edu.
Course Directories: Some courses use the COE system for electronic submission of homework.
On Unix, you will find a directory (or "folder") called Courses in your home directory. It contains a subdirectory for each class you are taking that uses course directories.
On COE Windows, go to My Computer to see your course directories. Each course directory is mapped to a drive letter.
Place a copy of your completed work in the course directory for your class. You can do this by drag-and-drop on Windows, with the cp command on Unix, or you can transfer files from non-COE machines using ftp or sftp.
Disk Quota: Students on the COE system have a quota of 500 Megabytes of disk space. If your academic work requires more space, ask your professor to request an increase in your quota from the systems staff. The material in your course directories (only coursework, please) does not count against your quota.
Changing your Password: Log into gateway.coe.neu.edu using ssh, or log in on a Solaris workstation. At the system prompt, type passwd and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also use the Account module in COE WebMail to change your password.
Forwarding your COE Email to Another Address: After logging onto a Unix workstation, type setup and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also use the Account module in COE WebMail to set up or remove mail forwarding.
Setting up your COE Web homepage: After logging onto a Unix machine, type setup and choose the www option. This will create a www directory in your Unix home directory and generate a generic html file called index.html for your homepage. The URL of your home page is http://www.coe.neu.edu/~username. Edit or add to the html files in your www directory to develop your web site.
Getting Help: Go to the HELP! page for answers to frequently asked questions. You can also send email to help@coe.neu.edu with specific questions.
