Letter to Parents
Welcome to the College of Communication and Information! As the Dean of CCI, I take great pleasure and pride in the exciting opportunities provided by this unique combination of Schools, faculty, staff and students. Established July 2002, CCI delivers a high-quality education that responds to the ever-changing, dynamic information marketplace. Whether you intend to be a journalist, public relations specialist, chief information officer, advertising manager, information manager, knowledge manager, web-designer, librarian, or graphic designer, our College can provide the knowledge to take you where you want to go.
Four schools have joined together to create this special partnership: Communication Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, and Visual Communication Design. Each is extremely popular with KSU students; this year the College was recognized as having the largest enrollment growth of any college at Kent State with nearly 4000 students enrolled in the college's undergraduate and graduate programs. The reason is obvious: individuals with communication and information expertise are constantly in demand.
It is easy to brag about our Schools!
The School of Communication Studies, which offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees, is nationally recognized for its scholarship. Its students have received national recognition for their talents as speakers and debaters. The School has been named Ohio's distinguished program in communication for 2003-2004 by the Speech Communication Association of Ohio.
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication, which offers bachelors and masters degrees, is in the nation's Top 20 undergraduate programs by size. Its professionally oriented curriculum and highly competent and experienced faculty have led to national recognition in awards, programs and grants.
The School of Visual Communication Design is the only graphic design program in the state of Ohio to win both the prestigious Academic Challenge and Program Excellence Grants given by the Ohio Board of Regents. VCD offers bachelors and masters degrees, and a unique combined bachelors/masters degree. The School has won many design awards and is recognized internationally for the quality of its design education.
The School of Library and Information Science, an exclusively masters program, is the largest graduate program in the University, the second largest graduate program of its kind in the U.S., and the only accredited program in library and information science in Ohio.
What can we do for you? Each school has much to offer; together they form a college that enriches student learning and integrates that learning with marketplace skills. Consider some of the many areas that can be explored in our programs: interpersonal, organizational and public communication; advertising; newspaper, magazine and broadcast journalism; photo-illustration; public relations; electronic media production; media management; information design; information architecture, photojournalism; communication studies; graphic design, illustration; media literacy; visual journalism, knowledge management, school, public, academic and special librarianship; and information science.
In addition, CCI offers a special interdisciplinary Masters program in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM) which explores in-depth how to manage effectively the information environment for business, industry, and public institutions.
As you consider your many options at Kent State University, remember that the College of Communication and Information has many opportunities, and we would be happy to answer your questions and explore your career goals with you.
