Undergraduate Program

The B. A. degree focuses on the study and practice of communication in applied, interpersonal, organizational, and public/media contexts. Students study human communication processes including interpersonal, group and organizational interaction, media use and effects, social interaction in new media environments, argumentation, and persuasion. The curriculum provides humanistic and social scientific orientations for those seeking to participate in communication-related professions in business, the media, government, law, sales, and the like, or to pursue graduate education.

Objectives of the Program

  1. to expand skills and understandings of verbal and mediated discourse, and critical appreciation of the human values of symbolic communication
  2. to advance knowledge concerning the functions, processes, and effects of communication
  3. to apply communication to the task of coping with the problems of modern society
  4. to encourage more active participation in the affairs of a free society

To implement these objectives the program provides coursework spanning all aspects of the art and science of human communication.

Program Goals for Majors Students working together in class

Upon completion of a program the student should:

  1. Understand the basic principles of human communication in personal and public/media settings.
  2. Understand and comprehend the uses of human communication.
  3. Be able to analyze and adapt to communicative interaction among individuals and groups.
  4. Be able to use effective and affective communication skills for desirable social and professional outcomes.
  5. Be able to apply the tools of communication analysis and criticism to speaking/listening situations.
  6. Be able to develop skills of independent discovery for continued self-education.
