Kent State University offers 118 majors within the bachelor's degree. Most of these programs are designed to be completed in four years by full-time students.

Minors are taken to complement or be an addition to a major, which allow students to explore a field of study or investigate a particular theme. Minors are generally between 18 and 24 credit hours and are independent of a major.

Kent State master's, post-master's and doctoral degree programs provide advanced training and knowledge in specialized areas. Students may engage in  research opportunities through the 38 academic units across the nine colleges that offer 107 master's, six Educational Specialist and 48 doctoral degree programs.

The Graduation Planning System, or GPS, tracks student progress to graduation. It is comprised of the student's degree audit, which includes all requirements for earning a degree in the declared program. It also includes an individualized plan of study, the Plan, which is created in consultation between student and advisor and approved by the advisor, outlining in semester-by-semester format the requirements the student must complete in order to remain on track for graduation.

GPS Gus Associate degrees prepare students for employment by allowing them to concentrate the majority of their studies in technical and related coursework. Students often use a two-year associate degree to continue on for a bachelor's degree. Kent State offers 37 associate degree majors on its seven regional campuses..

Certificate programs address contemporary, topical and/or workplace issues and are designed to deliver focused instruction and formalized guidance in a flexible manner. These certificates are open to to both degree-seeking and non-degree, undergraduate and graduate-level students.
