Draime Estate Internship Program
Draime tree trimming Internship Positions: Two for 2012.
Objective: To expose students to the many facets of professional estate gardening, grounds management, and public horticulture; to provide students physical, hands-on experiences in horticulture, landscape, and turf; to offer informal educational sessions, garden walks, and field trips.
Description: Draime Estate Gardens is a 9.5 acre private estate in Warren, Ohio, consisting of a collection of gardens, lawns, water features, sculptures, and hardscapes. Specific garden areas include the Japanese, chapel, orchestral, conifer, walled, rose, vegetable, and perennial gardens. Collections of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, aquatics, tropical plants, and container plantings make the Draime Estate Gardens a unique horticultural oasis.
Work Schedule: Daily garden hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm. General intern work schedules are up to 40 hours per week. Interns are required to work some evenings and weekends.
Compensation: $10.00 per hour.
Duties: Assist staff in the maintenance of the gardens including planting, mulching, mowing, watering, pruning, propagating, weeding, deadheading, fertilizing, and pest control. Also work with staff in maintaining water features, pathways, structures, and other hardscape elements. The internship is a hands-on, physical work experience in an outdoor environment.
Prerequisites: Must be a Kent State University student in good standing; must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions; must be willing to perform physical tasks such as lifting landscape materials, pushing wheelbarrows and carts, using gardening tools, and operating power equipment.
