Fields: authoritarian institutions, politics of democratization, comparative politics, social movements, and qualitative research methods.
Dr. Stacher's teaching interests include Middle East Politics (Egypt and Syria), non-violent social movements, and the politics of authoritarianism and democratization.
His research focuses on authoritarian adaptation of Arab republican regimes with special reference to Egypt and Syria. He has published on topics such as Egypt's Muslim Brothers, the Wasat movement, opposition politics and presidential elections in authoritarian contexts as well as human rights in Egypt.
Stacher is currently researching hereditary succession in republics by comparing presidential transfers in Syria and Egypt. His next project is on the the transformation of Egyptian authoritarianism.
