The National Science Foundation invites applications for graduate research fellowships to support graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees. Fellowships with stipends of $30,000 per year and an institutional cost of education allowance of $10,500 per tenure year are expected to be awarded. Awards are for up to 3 years usable over a 5-year period. A total of 1,000 fellowships are expected to be awarded this year.
Applicants must be US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents; be prepared to begin graduate study and research by summer or fall 2005. Fellowships are intended for individuals in the early stages of their graduate study, so applicants must have completed no more than 12 months of full-time graduate study when they apply. Basic research in fields supported by NSF usually is eligible, and bioengineering research with diagnosis or treatment-related goals is eligible IF it applies engineering principles in biology; bioengineering research to aid persons with disabilities also is eligible. The program does NOT support study in clinical, counseling, business or management fields, education, history (except history of science), or social work; work in medical, dental, law, public health or practice-oriented professional degree programs; or in joint science-professional degree programs such as MD/PhD and JD/PhD programs. The Smithsonian Institution offers fellowships for research and study in the following fields: animal behavior, ecology, environmental science including with emphasis on the tropics; anthropology including archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and physical anthropology; astrophysics and astronomy; earth sciences and paleobiology; evolutionary and systematic biology; folklife; history of science and technology; history of art, especially American, contemporary, African and Asian art, 20th Century American crafts, and decorative arts; materials research; molecular biology; social and cultural history of the United States. Smithsonian Institute Fellowships are offered at all levels, including:
POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS for scholars up to 7 years beyond the Ph.D. for term of 3-12 months with stipend of $35,000 per year plus allowances ($40,000 for earth and planetary sciences senior and postdoctoral fellowship stipends);
PREDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS for doctoral candidates to conduct dissertation research with term 3-12 months and stipend $20,000 per year plus allowances;
TEN-WEEK GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS for graduate students to conduct independent research usually before having been advanced to candidacy if in a PhD program with term of 10 weeks and stipend of $4,500.
LATINO STUDIES FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM that offers to US Latino/predoctoral students and postdoctoral or senior scholars opportunities to pursue research related to Latino history, art, and culture using Smithsonian resources; for term of 3-12 months with the opportunity to spend up to one third of the time in the field but not at the home institution; stipend for predoctoral fellowships is $20,000 per year plus allowances and post-doctoral and senior fellowships stipend is $35,000 per year plus allowances.

SPECIAL AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS:
Newberry Library/BritishAcademyFellowship for Study in Great Britain– deadline January 10, 2005– In cooperation with the BritishAcademy, the Newberry Library offers an exchange fellowship for up to 3 months’ study in Great Britain in any field in which the Newberry’s collections are strong. This post-doctoral award pays $1350 per month. Preference will be given to Newberry readers and staff and scholars who have previously used the Library.
Ecole des Chartes Exchange Fellowship – deadline January 10, 2005
Provides a monthly stipend and free tuition for an American graduate student at the Ecole Nationale des Chartes in Paris for a period of 3 months in the fall of 2005. Preference will be given to students from schools supporting the Center for Renaissance Studies.
Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbuttel Fellowship – deadline January 10, 2005 for linked long-term fellowship and March 1, 2005 for linked short-term fellowship
Applicants for long- and short-term fellowships at Newberry may also ask to be considered for this joint fellowship providing an additional 2-month fellowship at the HAB. The proposed project should link the collections of both libraries. The award pays 2,000 DM per month and travel expenses.
Weiss/Brown Publication Subvention Award – deadline January 10, 2005
Awards up to $15,000 to subsidize the publication of a scholarly book or books on European civilization before 1700 in the areas of music, theater, cultural studies, or French or Italian literature.
Frances C. Allen Fellowships – deadline March 1, 2005
These fellowships are for women of Native American heritage. While candidates for this award may be working in any graduate or pre-professional field, the particular goal of this Fellowship is to encourage Native American women in their studies of the humanities and social sciences. Fellowship tenure is from 1 month to 1 year with up to $8,000 in approved expenses.
SHORT-TERM FELLOWSHIPS:
Committee on Institutional Cooperation Graduate Student Fellowships – deadline January 6, 2005
For dissertation research in American Indian Studies by advanced graduate students at CIC institutions for 1-3 months of funding with stipends of $1,500 per month to cover research and travel expenses to libraries and archives.
American Society for 18th Century Studies Fellowship – deadline March 1, 2005
Short-term fellowship for PhD candidates or post-doc’s wishing to use the Newberry collections to study the period 1660-1815.
Lester J. Cappon Fellowship in Documentary Editing – deadline March 1, 2005
For post-doctoral scholars $5,000 to support historical editing projects based on Newberry sources. It supports residential research in Newberry collections in preparation of the edition, and also can defray other costs related to its preparation and publication including travel, photocopying, digitization, copyright fees, publication subventions, and so on.
Center for Great LakesCulture/Michigan State University Fellowships – deadline March 1, 2005– Two 1-month residential fellowships available for projects using Newberry collections to understand and interpret the cultural history and expressions of the diverse peoples of the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region. Open to scholars with the PhD or the equivalent or an established record of scholarly research with stipend of $1,250.
Audrey Lumsden-Kouvel Fellowship – deadline March 1, 2005
For postdoctoral scholars who wish to use Newberry’s extensive holdings in late medieval and Renaissance history and literature. Preference will be given to projects focusing on Romance cultures. This fellowship may be combined with non-residential fellowships and it provides stipend of $4,000 for a minimum of 3-months’ tenure.
