Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI)
Established in 1965, the Liquid Crystal Institute has become one of the premier academic liquid crystal research centers in the world. Among LCI’s major contributions was the invention of the nemantic liquid crystal twist cell display, better known as the LCD. Developed by Mr. James Fergason while he was with LCI in 1967, the technology was patented in the United States in 1971, changing the face of the modern wristwatch and paving the way for liquid crystal readouts on calculators and numerous other devices.
Today, Liquid Crystal Institute is at the forefront of research in liquid crystalline optical materials and has a strong foundation in basic research coupled with innovative application programs. LCI has:
- hundreds of scientific publications
- nearly thirty patents and several licenses to industrial partners who are rapidly incorporating the technology in displays
- an Industrial Partnership Program consisting of over thirty companies across the nation
- collaborations with institutions throughout the nation and the world
LCI scientists are always working to identify new areas of liquid crystal research and applications in communications and computing, as well as ways to expand applications to inlcude biological systems and medicine.
At Liquid Crystal Institute, our research promises to not only enrich our students, but to enrich our region, state and nation, both intellectually and economically. For more information, please visit LCI's website at: http://www.lci.kent.edu/
Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence (ISPV)
The Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence (ISPV) at Kent State University promotes interdisciplinary research into the causes and prevention of violence, engages in the design and evaluation of community-based programs for violence prevention, and fulfills its commitment to the multidisciplinary training of teachers, law enforcement personnel, and other professionals on the principles and practices related to violence prevention. The ISPV seeks to bridge the gap between science and practice to effectively inform the public regarding violence prevention policies.
The ISPV provides research, evaluation studies, training, data management and analysis, and consultation regarding the development of interventions related to all aspects of violence prevention. A partial list of ISPV consumers include:
- Schools and teachers
- Public and private organizations concerned with violence-related issues
- Law enforcement personnel, justice systems, and courts
- Organizations providing services to individuals and families impacted by violence
The ISPV draws on the expertise of faculty, staff, and graduate students from across the University including criminal justice studies, psychology, nursing, sociology, communications, English, business, philosophy, political science, anthropology, and law. In addition, the ISPV works closely with a regional community advisory council and a national advisory board, as well as professionals and faculty from affiliate organizations and partner institutions.
